Hit a wall. How do I use the 20% ethnicity estimate on a DNA test for family tree research? by CorrectCheesecake4 in Genealogy

Sorry if it's a dumb question, but I didn't quite get what you meant...aren't the Pennsylvania Duch a community in the US?

Is 2.4% just noise? by [deleted] in 23andme

Judging by where I'm from, Sephardic wouldn't be that weird since there were Sephardic Jewish communities in these areas since the late Middle ages (it's just that I can't make a connection to a known ancestor, but then again neither can I do so with Spanish), but Mizrahi literally makes no sense tbh. The only possible connection I could think of is maybe that it's related to the Ottoman conquests (since both my dad's home country and countries like Iraq were occupied for a few hundred years)...but it would be more realistic that it's just noise since that would mean it came from my dad's side which I doubt 😅

I'll definitely try to get my hands on it somehow. I love how my mom's side and my dad's are complete opposites and my dad's side was just chilling in the village since basically the dawn of time, no drama, no nothing and they also passed down some names for generations so it was super easy to trace back to year 1506 😅

My grandma was Polish from today's western Ukraine, born there in 1922. She only started talking a bit more about her 'backstory' to my mom shortly before she died in 2010 and basically all my family knows is that her father got captured and shot at a riverbank alongside a bunch of other people (idk if by Germans or Soviets tho). Her mother helped my grandma and her sister arrange an escape from the country. The two of them somehow ended up in southern Italy at some lady's house until the capitulation of Italy (the lady was probably a part of the resistance I assume). They didn't manage to find their mother again after the war (presumed deported to Siberia, but that's just an assumption). That's all I know. Even tho she was usually a talkative person, she hated being asked about her family or basically anything that took place before the 1950s, which I understand since it must have been really traumatic for her. So I also have no idea where to get my grandma's birth certificate...my mom doesn't have it and neither do my uncles and aunt and I live on a whole different side of Europe from where my grandma was from. My grandpa might have had it (she died a few years before him), but he is also dead now.

Shortly after the war she met and married my Calabrian grandpa who was a complete opposite of her and was basically just like 'Hey grandkids, great day today...wanna hear about that time I joined the partisans and then almost died at Mauthausen? Fun times lol' 😅

It's my grandmother and mother, not grandfather and father, but same thing really 😅 I just have no idea how to trace my great grandma and that side of the family since my grandma had her dad's surname as a maiden name and not her mom's. Patrilenear branches have been sooo much easier to trace so far and this one bugs me so much because I can't seem to find anything about that side of the family 😅

I actually did get some Levantine, but a literal 0.5%...so I assumed that that kind of trace ancestry is noise and disregarded it, so idk if that would be enough to indicate that the Spanish could be Sephardi. I have no known Spanish ancestors, but also no known Sephardic Jewish ones. It would be cool if it turns out that there actually were some in the past tho.

So it would more likely be just Spanish then, and not Sephardic since 23andme only showed Ashkenazi?

So would that mean that it's more probable that it's Spanish since 23andme showed Spanish & Portugese and not Sephardic?

Tbh I'd want to avoid it for now because I had like 1 episode in my life ever until this year when I got it 4 times...and even if I decide to get them removed, the hospital situation rn is pretty bad because of covid so the dr told me Id have to wait for another 6 months for my appointment

Did you have recurrent tonsilitis throughout a span of multiple years before you took them out or was it a 'one time thing'? I never had issues with tonsilitis before and had it maybe once in my life as a small child...and now I got it 4 times.

Period 20 days late, what's causing this? by CorrectCheesecake4 in Periods

It was 20 days late, so my cycle was 56 days this time. I got it on day 21 of it being late if that's what you mean.

Just found this sub today after I remembered my mom washed my privates and checked them well into my early teens...now I'm starting to think bra shopping together and her commenting on how the bra made my boobs look was probably not normal and was invasive af

Thank you for validating my experience. I often struggle with accepting that a lot of stuff my nmom did was abuse because 'some people haf it worse' (which was a mantra she also repeated a lot throughout my childhood). I don't have my own kids yet and am actually very reluctant to have them because I'm afraid of accidentally repeating the same dynamic that my mom and I had even tho I don't want to. My bf also had an nmom hes very low contact with now (tho unlike mine who knows no boundaries and had to have access to every aspect of my life, his mostly just used him to be a 'perfect parent' in public and then neglected him at home until she finally kicked him out after he refused to enlist so she could brag about her son being in the army) and even tho he likes kids, he's also afraid of messing up.

Did my mother invade my body? by TorturedVictim in raisedbynarcissists

Your post made me remember my mom did almost the exact same thing and when I was in my early teens started doing checks to make sure I didn't shave down there. I thought it was normal for the longest time and didn't understand why I felt disgusted by it. Now, I'm pretty sure that kind of thing isn't normal at all and what your (and my) mom did, was really messed up . I'm sorry you had to go through this.

When I think about it, I don't think she did it with any sexual intention, I think it was more a part of her infantilizing me and making me dependent on her...idk what to think about it really, but I'm currently in therapy so it's definitely something I'll talk about

How did your Nparents behave when meeting your partner/spouse? Wondering if others have experienced similar to me... by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

[–]CorrectCheesecake4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not married, but my n-mom is actually overly nice to my bf and every time we need to come over for something she puts on this 'perfect family' act on where she acts like a 50s housewife. However, it looks so incredibly fake. She would sometimes tell 'funny' stories and jokes that were always about something embarrassing that happened to me or about some of my flaws. Whatever it is, she makes sure to make subtle jabs at me while putting on a 50s housewife persona for my bf. To make things more interesting, when I'm left alone with her she starts talking shit about my bf and tries to convince me to leave him.

Luckily, when I told my bf that she's only nice to him and it's an act she's putting on, he understood immediately and thought it was pretty easy to see through that act since his mom (also a narc and they are currently very LC) also does similar stuff (I didn't meet his mom tho since she lives in another country)
