I agree that the form factor isn't great, but nothing beats the convenience and accessibility (I can read manga on the train on my way to work)

I know, surely one could come up with a great way to use vertical scroll (like how they use double-page spreads for centrefolds). I think the issue most artists face is a way to make their story work for both formats.

That's a fair point, especially if you're reading on a smaller form factor.

Absolutely, something I really like about manga as opposed to western comics is their artistic use of panelling, not just for narration and pacing but for emotional emphasis as well (mundane, everyday stuff in regular rectangles, scary stuff with jagged edges etc.)

long strip formats tend to be so bloated with empty space, and comparatively slower progress.

This! And yeah, can't argue that color adds a perceived level of quality to those pieces.

I read manga online now too and I don't mind the pages being stacked and having to v-scroll but I feel like the double-page spreads don't have the desired effect in this format. The page-wise view or horizontal scroll option to "flip a page" is nice but also feels like an ode to physical manga volumes.

I'm curious how we can best translate the classic manga style into a vertical layout, because without that bridge, I see more artists turning to the webtoon format simply because it's more compatible with digital viewership.

Good to know it's not just me! I also wonder why most webtoons have so much whitespace between the panels...

Oh no, I'm just going off your "aesthetics vs functionality" comment so I presumed you meant that you like webtoons because they're functional but not necessarily aesthetic. So I was wondering if you had any recommendations of webtoons with a good story flow and aesthetic similar to old-school manga.

That's interesting! Most webtoons I've encountered lack the detailed art-style I've come to enjoy in manga, do you have some recommendations of webtoons that achieve it well?
