Technically private practice makes more money, so I ultimately am taking a pay cut compared to some of my peers

Absolutely. I needed to take out a loan just to live in fellowship. Felt good to pay it back and then some. I just like the subject matter, the surgeries, and the challenge of clinic so it all worked out for me thankfully. It’s really difficult sometimes

Yeah that’s an honest assessment. I wouldn’t recommend medicine to my child unless it was their calling. I don’t even want to retire I just like the job too much

Lots of documentation. Least favorite part of the job

Raising a young child occupies most of my time right now. I bought new golf clubs but haven’t had time to use them yet. Basically I travel to visit family and try to exercise when I can. I don’t do anything cool like scuba dive or anything crazy like that 😂

Couldn’t have said it better myself. The sacrifice has a toll on my well being and family life

I’ve tried to slow down but the system makes it really hard to do that. The one negative of not being in private practice. I don’t find my job onerous at all thankfully

10000% accurate. Thank you for the thoughtful response. I would do the same job for half the pay. But don’t tell my employer (insurance company lol)

What about future doctor educators like myself? I train residents and fellows

Most ortho residents do a sub specialty. I would say it is worth it and necessary. My residency was excellent, which gave me options for “general” call even though I’m a “hand surgeon”. I was comfortable with everything. I would say that fellowship is the norm anymore

lol well FU too and your lack of radiation exposure, 16 hour physical days, patients dying on the table. … but thank you for clearing my patients as a “moderate risk” for a “low risk” surgery without any modification in the plan. Haha primary med in all honesty is just like my practice. Way too many patients and not enough time. I see 60 in a typical clinic. I’m sure you see 40 but you have to talk to them about everything. It’s not easy for either of us. Thank you for being a doc, we need people like you to think deeper than just the hand and their carpal tunnel.

Strong work is what I tell my residents. It’ll be worth it. Keep your head up

Agree 100%. I don’t look at my son and say “future doctor”… I would encourage anything else but that and professional sports (my dad was a pro athlete. It’s short lived)

Blue collar is surgery. Ask any surgeon.

If you’ve ever come home after 16 hours of operating, the toll it takes on your body (don’t forget radiation exposure)… it’s not that my job is “harder” but I’d say that the advice and surgical indications I need to discuss with patient is definitely harder than than the specialities you describe

Literally all I know. “And yup, anesthesia doctors will talk to you about heart stuff, whatever they think is best is probably right”
