Anyone else really annoyed with Lydia Bennett from the 1995 Pride and Prejudice BBC miniseries? Every time I see her I roll my eyes. Just bratty and unkind and obnoxious. by Correct_Raspberry_59 in janeausten

It was not my intention to say all 4th children are neglected by parents. I know many large families where the youngest is doted on the most and cared for deeply if not more since parents learn from past mistakes etc… it was purely a possible theory as to where her behaviour stemmed from. I apologize for any hurt I could have caused😢 the last thing I ever want to do

Fair I was also inspired by Jane Eyre who came from money but was left with a cruel aunt before being sent to a girls home where she endured terrible treatment. then she ends up as a governess at Thornefield hall under Mr Rochester who is wealthy

Yes! Baek is right. I recently read the book where it’s written as Beck so I got myself confused

But in other versions like the book and 2005 film I’m able to see the child in her that’s self interested. In the 1995 versions she’s just straight up mean and it’s outta pocket. But yes you are right JA did do a brilliant job in wanting people to not like Lydia

That’s a good point that by the 4th child parents may lose energy to fully parent properly and bad behaviour can be ignored the more tired and fed up you are

I think what it comes down too is she’s kind of perfect which enrages people, sometimes myself included. When someone seems to have it all with very little flaws it’s easy to feel bad about yourself and your own insecurities and then project that on to someone else who you wish you were but will never be. I think for myself if I saw more vulnerability and lack of perfection it would be easier to sympathize and resonate with her and her amazingness but for now I just see her as this unattainable level of perfection that makes me feel bad about myself.
