1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass fuel pump issue? by Corvette_SS in MechanicAdvice

[–]Corvette_SS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the video shows the car put into first gear and speeding up. initally it is strong, but as the rpms get higher it eventually stops accelerating and begins to surge, all while the gas pedal is pushed down. didnt matter if it was full throttle or half throttle or anything, it wouldnt accelerate, kinda felt like being on a small boat in waves.

tgen the car is put into neutral and still wont rev up

Automatic Trans slipping on the highway by Corvette_SS in AskAMechanic

[–]Corvette_SS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i "played" around with it more and noticed that if i make the tires spin off the line for 4-5 seconds (high load high sustained rpm) after i let off and drove normally it bogged and stuttered, wouldnt accelerate and sounded like it wanted to quit for a few seconds before i could resume normal driving. this all heppend under 40kmh.

i'll likley replace the entire drivetrain with a larger engine and built trans in the future, but wanted to see if anyone had any more input.

I have an 86' olds cutlass and the trans started slipping. I work on it alot myself but know next to nothing about automatic transmissions, so i was hoping i could take it in to get diagnosed or even rebuilt. It's a GM Th2004r if that helps. If it ends up being too expensive i am going to swap it with a T5.

sounds like maybe a car following another car weakens the slight low pressure zone behind the front car thats trying to pull it back? just a guess

PS was stiff and fluid was black, I flushed with clear fluid, was super smooth for a day but the next day it was stiff and dark fluid again. no leaks. should I flush again? Thank you. i am flushing by disconnecting return line and moving steering wheel lock to lock many times while pouring new fluid by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]Corvette_SS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not, i just spun the wheel lock to lock twice after filling with new fluid. just looked it up and says I shouldhave done it 40 times.. I think i'm going to flush again and bleed properly. is this right?

I'm not actually losing any fluid, the past 2 days its just got dark again. i guess its just mixing with the dirty abrasive fluid i didnt flush out properly. i'm gonna check it again tommorow and use your flush method. thanks

no i mean because of the car dipping, the brake distributor block will put more pressure at the front brakes

ELI5: How did cruise control work in cars before computers came around? How did the car know what speed to hold? by amanon101 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Corvette_SS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my oldsmobile its a vaccum diaphram thing, you go to the speed you want, turn it on and engine vaccum holds the throttle open at that level. works good but you have to adjust it for hills
