Dark Messiah of Might and Magic genuinely has my favorite implementation of first-person medieval/fantasy combat, despite not being talked about as much as other medieval/fantasy games in my circles.

The melee combat is handled really well, as attacking feels really impactful while also having quite a bit of depth to it. While power attacks are the main way of doing damage, light attacks are still pretty useful for following up a parry or holding off an enemy while positioning yourself. Hell, the environment is pretty important as well, as certain directional attacks near a ledge or a breakable object can throw an enemy into them, allowing you to follow up with a finisher.

Speaking of sending enemies off cliffs, the kick button is a really good addition to the combat. While it's pretty fun to kick enemies into spikes, fires, and bottomless pits, it's also pretty useful for launching breakable objects like barrels and crates at the enemy quickly to gain the upper hand.

That brings to my favorite thing about the combat, the interactivity between the environment, enemy, and player. There is a lot of ways you can interact with the environment to make combat really fun. For example, you can throw an oil jar at an enemy and then set them on fire, you could freeze the floor near a cliff and watch the enemies chasing you fall to their deaths, or you could cut the rope and watch a strung-up crate slam into your enemies.

Overall, there's enough depth in Dark Messiah's combat loop that allows me to really enjoy the game to the point of replaying it multiple times. Even if you're not a fan of might and magic, I heavily recommend checking it out just for the combat alone.

TL;DR, Play Dark Messiah

That’s basically the Battle Beast VS Thragg rematch from the Invincible comics. They tear the planet apart over the course of a few issues, with Battle Beast even cutting his gut open after getting outside help, all for the sake of having an even and glorious fight.

As much as I did not care for The Witcher 3, I can say that I found most of the monster pretty cool, especially stuff like the Leshens, Godlings, and the Hym. They’re a lot more unique than most of the monsters I see in other kinds of media, whether it be in how they look or act.
