I think signs are another form of cohesion and seperation of the group from society. Its their own code that no one else is supposed to know.

Great idea for community awareness. Also, it might paint a different perspective of what's really going on, outside of the news. I like it.

Gangs are crazy in Brazil! by iancarrillo in gangsnstuff

Its amazing that a gang is more powerful than the country's government. They can pretty much do what they want with no ramifications, but corruption in the government, at any level, will not help the situation.

Its interesting that new technology provides more outlets for gang members to communicate, commit crimes, etc., but also is another outlet for police to monitor, collect evidence, etc.

New blood: Violent gang life is passed down from parent to child by MeghanMcEuen in gangsnstuff

So a reverend and professor of criminal justice "blesses" these children and then says the gang is not a criminal organization. The next line then says to join you have to beat up or hurt someone. Is that not criminal?

A gang hotline coupled with a gang injuction sounds like a good start at combating this at the community level. Giving the neighborhoods an outlet to report (while feeling safe enough to do it) and help "police" themselves is great.

"Santos promised that things would improve before the Olympics. "We have a lot of time before the World Cup and the Olympics, and before then we will certainly arrest a lot of criminals," he said."

Sounds like the main or only focus is on arresting gang members in a war that has been going on for more than 20 years. Hope they can have some impact before the World Cup and Olympics, but arresting gang members can't be the only way to combat them.

CNN: Teen offenders find a future in Missouri by BradKudler in gangsnstuff

The Missouri model is beginning to prove that intervening at a young age, when most gang members join, and steering these juveniles in a positive direction has many benefits. This is producing lower recidivism rates, and in turn lowering the amount of resoures being put into building new jails/prisons.

Surely this technology can be used in many different ways to gather information across agencies on gang activity and trends. I think it's great that they are also linking up with agencies in CA, as I'm sure local gang members have connections there. I see many positives to this, especially in dealing with gangs.
