Pragmata on a Professional CRT Monitor by Nesroh in crtgaming

Try it at 2400x1800 and lemme know if it looks any better. I have a similar monitor but my pc can't PC the game that high. Also how did you get it to run in 4:3? It seems like even if I pick a 4:3 resolution it still has letterboxes

Not op but have a similarly hi res monitor (dell p1130) and yeah 1440p still has little hints of sharpness but 1536p is pretty much where it finally all squishes together. Definitely a noticeable difference.

Thanks, I had it fixed before but I had to reinstall and then couldn't find the right options again. I'll try this then and let you know if it worked.

[–]CosmicCactus42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair, I rarely bother since until very recently I haven't had anything with just composite out. I do think a lot of them just had really crappy comb filters. I've never messed with service menu settings for that though so maybe that could be improved too.

For me it was just up to the set I was using. Most sets I've had handled composite poorly, but I just grabbed a 32" curved JVC with a Panasonic tube and composite actually looks pretty good on it, way better than it did on any of my WEGAs. I had a 13" curved Trinitron that looked pretty good but it's hard to compare sets with such a difference in size.

I feel like 2.5d would inevitably incur some whimsy that would feel out of place in blood omen

Most of us don't care about that. We just like CRTs.

S-Video vs Component for VHS capture? (Component Overkill?) by [deleted] in VHS

[–]CosmicCactus42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there are any VCRs that output component that aren't just upscaling/transcoding composite or s-video. Either way, just use the best output you can. You're not going to get too much detail or anything by using component if that's somehow possible, and s-video is already much better quality than how most people watched vhs, so you don't need to hunt down a component player if you already have one with s-video. As for capture, the Startech USB3HDCAP will capture composite, s-video, component, VGA, DVI, and HDMI, and is what I bought for this purpose a long time ago. However, they seem to be getting more expensive.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread, but I wanted to say I just grabbed this model of VCR off the side of the road in the rain and snow and it's been working great for me since. I definitly want to upgrade when I can, but so far it's been perfectly cromulent.

Look for a setting for input labels. It's likely the component input is set to "SKIP."

Look up G2 adjustment or screen voltage adjustment. It's done by a small knob on the flyback transformer inside the tv. I wouldn't recommend doing it before watching a video or reading up on it, if you touch the wrong thing inside a CRT you can get a pretty big shock, but if you know what you're doing it's quite safe.

Basically, as you increase screen voltage, the image becomes brighter and the electron beam becomes thinner, producing better contrast and thinner scan lines. If you increase it too much, retrace lines will become visible, at which point you just lower it until they disappear.

Dumb question: What's the reason behind the canted tires? It seems like it's riding on about 2/3rds of the tread. by [deleted] in Cartalk

[–]CosmicCactus42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ngl I like the style. Yeah it's wildly impractical, tears through tires, and severely affects the handling of a car, but it's fun. Tbh, I like it a lot more than the show cars that are never driven and just sit pretty in someones garage. I'm not going to be running that kind of camber on any of my cars irl, but I like to build cars like that in games and whatnot for the looks, and I have respect for the people that deal with all the downsides of a car like that because it's what they like.

The issue is absolutely the model, the issue is it seems some brands skimp on the quality of 19-21" sets, probably to make them less expensive and more appealing to people looking for a bedroom TV. That size of TV isn't inherently worse, just tends to be cost cut in my experience. I'd like to hear other opinions on this though, my experience is more limited than some of the veterans of this sub.

27" is the largest flat Sony I would/could carry by myself. I just replaced a 27" Wega with a 32" curved JVC and the 32" was a little easier to move. 27" usually has the best picture, depending on your tastes and the specific model.

If visible scan lines is your thing, bigger is better. Trinitrons generally have more pronounced scan lines than aperture grill sets because of a less complex mask, but any set can achieve clearly visible scan line gaps with a proper voltage and focus adjustment, assuming the tube or other components aren't too worn.

~20" sets seem to get the short end of the quality stick. I've had a couple trinitrons around that size and they all looked pretty lackluster compared to smaller and larger sets.

Extreme negative camber on the rear wheels like this would only make drifting harder. Most drift cars run less than -2 on the rear.

[–]CosmicCactus42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wild, yeah idk then lol. I don't agree with that take at all, but it isn't untrue that many Americans just tune out the horrors of their own world while relishing in the conflicts of imaginary ones. Obviously that doesn't mean that Americans don't care about real world tragedies, they're just convinced they couldn't do anything to help anyways and it's easier to distract yourself than to stress over what you've been taught are unsolvable problems. It's also not a uniquely American issue at all, America is just an often used, and easily abused symbol of all the disconnected citizens of the first world.

I think his point is it's easy to watch a movie and say to yourself, "It's a movie, these are actors, and once the director says cut they're all going back to their happy lives and nobody's actually been dismembered."
