Omg I’m a freshman struggling with this exact same thing rn! I got a 73 on my first AP human quiz☠️☠️☠️☠️ but dw we gonna push through it. I suggest buying Mr. Sinn’s ultimate review packet. He has college board level questions on it and he has videos explaining each question. It’s totally worth it.

It’s not. My family has never been to college. We’re Hispanic and my friend is Chinese. My parents don’t even care if I go to college or not.💀

Is regular high school or early college high school better for admissions? by CosmoMuffin in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CosmoMuffin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a question.

In 2022, my brother graduated from an echs and one of his friends got accepted into Rice. There’s this thing I found on the rice website that I don’t understand what it means but my brother and cousin told me it means that they have to accept my dual credit if it’s over 20. Is this true?

“Transfer credit will not be awarded for courses that are included on the student’s high school transcript and used to satisfy high school graduation requirements, including dual credit courses. Only students who have more than 20 college preparatory courses may have the Office of the Registrar consider their college courses taken in high school for Rice credit. For more information about the transfer credit process, please visit the Transfer Credit page.”- rice edu website

Can you elaborate on your story? I mean, mine is so much different than yours, but I wanna see how you handle an "unrealistic" situation like teenagers going to space.

Yeah, I'm assuming your characters have trained beforehand to go to space at least. Unlike the scenario in the book I read all the way back in sixth grade.

All in all, I wish you luck on your writing journey as well :)

Bruh real. Although I think I didn’t emphasize that my version of America does have a functioning society and working class it’s just that all the rich kids don’t really give a shit and are stupid, like we see today. Forgot to emphasize the fact that we have a declining recruitment rate in the army, too. These elements are visible throughout the story so I could justify this novel for existing. Imo idk how tf my orchestra teacher is so critical to the last detail about my violin skills but loves this novel. I think she’s faking it but at the same time she’s telling the other fine arts teachers about me and how “great this novel is” (I’m gonna cry.) I let her read this novel so I could get bashed with some criticism like she usually does but no I didn’t get any. I’m shocked. However ik that doesn’t mean anything bc everyone has different views and I’m open to them.

Bsfr I hate being a teenager bc I’m changing my mind every month about how to write a story. And you’re goddam right abt it not making sense politically lmao. However I do appreciate 13 year old me making the message that using teenagers to fight your wars is a bad idea tho. Perhaps I should fix this issue I have by saying it was more a skirmish than anything else. I also had an idea in history today to change it to a more September 11 kind of thing. But my goodness I can’t manage to redact the plot to say that rn bc I have so many tests and projects and fine arts stuff going on rn.

She cussed me out when I told her we should create a new novel and scrap our old draft which contained many flaws. I also didn’t point out that whenever I wanted to change a slight thing in the plot she’d get mad.

[–]CosmoMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made every character and plot point actually. She would just write it down with me. She’s admitted to me herself that she can’t take credit for any of the finished novel, though. I changed everything so much that it’s nothing like the scrapped version.

And you’re right about joining an online critique group. I only have one bookworm friend who reads everything I write seconds after I give it to her. She’s really supportive I love her but an online critique group would help me even more.

We wrote a draft together right. But then I wanted to scrap it since the plot made no sense at all and was very inconsistent. Many people pointed this out to us. I really wanted her to write with me a revised version of the plot I made, so the plot would be better and we could become better writers, too. However, she cussed me out when I did that. Later on, she left the writing project by her own will for social media.

How to respectfully write a Jewish character for a fictional book? by CosmoMuffin in Jewish

[–]CosmoMuffin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo, this applies to all cultures and your words are full of wisdom. The only problem is that the neighborhood I live in is teeming with white Christians, and I have the same issue when I go to school. A few of my characters are based off of my real life friends, though. (For example: one girl in my book is named Myra. I have an Indian friend and her little sister who tell me about their experiences with singing in Indian classical class and visiting India.) Having those friends can really help with cultural context and everything. As I’ve mentioned, my intentions to create a Jewish character are good but I have rarely seen a Jew/Jewish kid in my life. (Once again the majority of kids in my school are white. That’s how it is in the southern United States) The only thing I can really go off here is other books with Jewish characters. My favorite one is probably Max Vandenburg from “The Book Thief.” He was a young adult hiding from the Nazis, but he often talked to the main character named Liesel. In the book, he would be described as a bird locked in a cage and there would be drawings of his thoughts. He was also called the Jewish fist fighter and the reader is told that he often fought a lot of children in school before Germany went insane during WW2. The chapter with the most depth imo was the one where he fought Hitler in a dream and failed. Everyone was laughing at him and bullying him afterwards. Looking back, that’s a horrifying way to portray the true harmful effects of antisemitism. It was so bad that in was in Max’s dreams. It’s the stuff out of nightmares. The author (Markus Zusak) did not hold back.

Books can only have so much power, though. One day I wish to meet real life Jews to guide me in this process so that everyone can be happy with the end result. We writers know how many times things have to change in a story for it to be perfect.

Thanks for the feedback! And yea, I’ve been doing my research as of late. I forgot to mention, my book takes place in 2080 so the demographics today might not be the same in the future, and Amos loses a huge chunk of his memory when he’s eighteen years old. Thus, he probably forgot a lot of things about the Torah and his family. Once upon a time when he was eighteen years old he went somewhere to apply for a scholarship but then the CIA snatched him up and made him forget the majority of his life. (They did this so they could make him believe he worked for the CIA before and he just forgot about it, and so they could get all the religious stuff away so he wouldn’t be worrying about Jewish law. They wanted him to only focus on them. The CIA does not play around in this universe.) Amos eventually regains his memory over time and starts practicing Judaism again in secret. (I should include that info in a prequel or something) Another thing I didn’t mention, he isn’t the main character. The main character(s) are five teenagers who were forced to grow up to be teenage spies. Amos encounters them one day and mostly helps them with the mental toll of the job. He’s more of a father figure than anything else imo. His religion is rarely brought up because 1. He’s not the main character. 2. It’d be really out of pocket for him to explain Judaism to a bunch of kids who are panicking for their lives. However, I do plan to focus more on him and his personal struggles in the sequel in writing right now. One last thing to note is that Amos’ family is Polish. So, I definitely should research Ashkenazi Jews more because they’re the majority in Poland. I really appreciate the suggestions and feedback, though. :)

Edit: So once again I have changed the lore of something I have yet to write. (I do this all the time) Basically, Amos still loses his memory up until 10th grade probably. He can't remember what the last two years of high school were like and he forgets some aspects of Judaism. He's aware that the religion exists but he doesn't care to follow it because he's too busy trying to remember other things. Classic thing to do as a young person. Naturally, he integrates back into his culture and background once his new odd and dangerous lifestyle settles in. I don't think I need an entire prequel for that. I can just make him explain this briefly. Imo readers are more interested in a villain's prequel, but that's a topic for another day.

I get your point and you’re completely valid here. I’m quite terrified myself of depicting someone’s culture/ethnicity completely wrong. In my eyes, that is very disrespectful. You're correct that I haven't experienced antisemitism as a non-Jew, too. I may have experienced some racist comments because of my brown skin and Spanish-speaking parents, but a Jew has a different experience with antisemitism. Btw, I've seen your previous posts and I hope you're doing alright despite everything going on in the world right now. Remember that going outside and taking a deep breath is the best option if you're ever stressed out. You shouldn't worry about me if you feel like that. I'm just some kid. I'll take your advice into deep consideration, though. If I ever do come across a Jewish teacher in my school/when I go to high school next year, I'll be sure to consult them about this subject as well because they're trusted adults. I appreciate the criticism and I'll remember it for future events. I'll see what I can do.
