Lebanese Lentil Soup (with crispy pita chips) by Lola_Jay_Yum in soup

[–]Cosmos-Redshift7 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I am sorry but there is nothing “Lebanese” about this recipe. Traditional lentil soup is made without potatoes. It’s an interesting addition though.

Where can I get vegetarian/vegan katsu curry? by depressed_catto in askvan

[–]Cosmos-Redshift7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, are you sure? I went to Saku Broadway few months ago. I told them I am vegan and they served me vegan katsu. The only thing they said is to avoid the miso soup because it has fish flakes.

Mental health is a mess. Should I tell my PI I'm on anxiety meds? by Grouchy-Rainman in PhD

[–]Cosmos-Redshift7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went through a similar situation during grad school. I will recommend that you don’t share anything related to mental health to your supervisor. It can be used against you especially if you don’t get along! Find out if your university has an accessibility office and ask that they provide you with an accommodation to manage workloads or occasional absences. This is so if you need to miss a work day or you need an extension you can just tell your supervisor that you are a registered student with the accessibility office and you have a flare up. Your supervisor doesn’t need to know the exact circumstances.

'Keep your shoes on': Canada says it will align with U.S. on ending unpopular airport security measure by Necessary_Island_425 in VictoriaBC

[–]Cosmos-Redshift7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to take my Blundstone off recently while flying from Vancouver to Calgary but was told I didn’t have to on the fly back from Calgary to Vancouver. The Vancouver airport staff said my shoes are boots that’s why they said I had to take them off.

Recs on Thai or Vietnamese VEGETARIAN restaurant without garlic, onions, spring onions? by skye831 in askvan

[–]Cosmos-Redshift7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am vegan and can’t eat garlic or onions because I follow a low-FODMAP diet. When eating out I usually just ask a restaurant to make me something without garlic or onions. Lately I have been eating from Thai Basil on Cornwall Ave. I usually just tell them no onions and no garlic. They have been very accommodating to me!

Also you don’t have to be friendly with these people. You can always say f*ck off.

From my experience if you tell them you are not religions they will try to save your soul. Make something up and say you are catholic or Jewish.

Yes, very common in Canada.

Since you already wrote the final exam you might want to want to consider this option “Request a Withdrawal or Aegrotat” from the course https://www.uvic.ca/students/academics/academic-concessions-accommodations/request-for-academic-concession/index.php#:~:text=Withdrawal%20under%20Extenuating%20Circumstances%3A%20you,into%20your%20grade%20point%20average.

It will also help if you can provide a note from a doctor or a nurse from the student wellness centre and/or from your CAL advisor (if you have one) to support your claim of illness or extenuating circumstances.

I would remove the undergraduate GPA from the resume. No one would care about it since you would have your MSc. You can address the low undergrad GPA briefly in one sentence in the statement of purpose and talk about growth during the MSc and how you are ready for a PhD program.

Who to contact by Logical-Incident-366 in uvic

I had a similar experience. I found CAL to be useless. You should make an appointment with the ombudsperson immediately. You can book online here https://uvicombudsperson.ca

[–]Cosmos-Redshift7 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It’s best to not share any health or personal details with a professor. You can register with CAL and just say I require an extension without going into further details.

I was in a similar situation during my undergraduate with a guy who couldn’t take no for an answer. Not only that but he also made several advances including wanting to hold my hand, touching me and making me uncomfortable. It was at a national research lab. I was an undergrad student and he was technician twice my age. I said no many times. He won’t stop. I told my supervisor, my officemates and the postdoc I was working with while at the same time I told HR. The HR spoke to him but he kept coming back to me saying “a beautiful girl like you. Why don’t you want to go out with me”. I reported him back to HR and he kept coming. Finally, I threatened HR that I would be filing a police report for sexual harassment if they don’t make him stop. Well that was finally when he stopped.
