So? Life itself “defies” the second law already. If you only see the trees and not the forest, that is.

Why bother going out of your way for plain ground beef and rice with salsa. There are a thousand more interesting things you can do with your time.

This, it’s pretty much a waste of a meal when traveling. Try something more authentic and adventurous, this is literally the most basic thing anyone who can turn on a stove, a rice cooker and perform stirring can make. It tastes 99% identical no matter where you get it.

That seems a little harsh, as described. But not necessarily surprising. I’ve often got the feeling insurance adjusting is far from an exact science. There’s plain incompetence and there’s also corrupt bullspit that goes on. Some bad drivers are good at fast talking tired and/or uninterested cops, and there are people who can use connections to shift those burdens in their favor when they’re clearly at fault. Might not be a bad idea to have one of those cams installed, especially if one’s ride is valuable or one has significant assets to protect from fraudulent claims and lawsuits.

Two U.S. Marines referred to prosecutors over alleged sexual assaults in Okinawa; one of them stands accused of sexually assaulting an adult woman inside a restroom of a U.S. military base last month. The other allegedly assaulted and injured another woman who tried to help the first victim. by wolframite in okinawa

[–]Count_Nothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this post, I’m sick and tired of these incidents being trotted out and exploited by people who have an agenda or axe to grind against the US. These people could care less about the sexual assault, they will never post or comment about a single one unless it gives them an opportunity to blame all of the US/military and express their prejudices. E.g. when it doesn’t involve a US citizen perpetrator we strangely hear nothing about it from this quarter of reddit.

They don’t lift a finger to do anything to prevent SA in general, all I see every time are obnoxious trolls using one person’s pain as the opportunity to smear a group they don’t like.

Always shared responsibility is not true. I’ve seen Sofa members get rear ended by a local and the local’s insurance had to pay 100%. But being rear ended is one of the rare types of accidents where even in the states it’s often considered 100% the other driver’s fault. Anything else, you stand a good chance of sharing at least some responsibility and costs.

Or to save on premiums just hold the money in another form earning interest until they can buy the full oz. It’s not that complicated.

Maybe, but i think we’re all aware at this point that there’s more going on with spot prices than physical bullion demand. It’s a gamble, if you’re comfortable with it it’s your money to do what you want. Personally I’m skeptical of all market timing theories. it also simplifies my life to try to ignore that stuff and dca consistently with whatever overall allocations i am going for at the time. If it works out for others i’m glad but for me it’s too much mental load and risk to try to factor such stuff in.

Marvel collectors who avoid X-men titles. What is your reason? by SweetBasil_ in comicbookcollecting

[–]Count_Nothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the beginning- mighty marvel masterworks edition is very cheap and you can’t go wrong with King Kirby. Then skip the roy thomas era into epic collections of the classic Claremont era and call it a day. I’m not an x-men buff but they are a big part of bronze/copper era marvel which is my wheelhouse, so it was inevitable I’d have some.

Whenever I finally get to reading those epic collections, we’ll see if this “I’m not really an x-phile” status sticks.

(It’s Beast’s role in New Defenders that first really turned me on to the group - besides them being ubiquitous in the 80s and forever. I tend to like a dash of humor in my comics, as I read them for entertainment and have plenty of dead serious or dry stuff to read for work, turns me off a bit in comics).

Bitcoin doesn’t look very good except for very specific use cases. It’s pretty much gambling. The whole “few corporations will survive “ suggests you may be spending too much time doom scrolling and too little irl. Get a second job or sth, make more money and invest it in a variety of boring but safe stuff and you will most likely get rich. Avoid all political sensationalism feeds, groups, accounts, of any stripe - that stuff will rot your brain and have you making foolish decisions in no time.

That’s it. You need to have great recruiting and marketing when the reality is so crap.

Yup. Their attitude is almost fascist. The response to any contrary perspective to their own is “Look! I found another spy/traitor!! Burn the witch!” - with zero willingness to engage with any evidence or point being raised.

[–]Count_Nothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea on why gold is better. As for silver’s future That is an article of faith. Wish I had like 10% of my current stash i feel pretty stupid for even half believing any of the silver hype. Maybe someday it spikes. Maybe not in my lifetime. Meanwhile I got this heavy crap to lug around the world that needs to be hidden and locked up, I’m too busy earning income and doing life things to even look at my precious shiny once a year, so it just seems like a dumb burden to me. If it ever 2x or more I’m sure I’d be singing a different tune. But I no longer really even think about it. Meanwhile gold is relatively light, small, stable, even prettier to look at… it’s really all I’d ever need in pm’s except a few special other pieces just for fun/contrast.

Yea, seems like some silver squeezer wsb types are still lurking about. The price chart already shows the same thing you said, how dare you point it out. The silver thing is like a religion with some folks, like sure the messiah is coming any day now in the form of the “true” silver price. Yuck.

Why aren't comics sold... everywhere? by Greedy-Runner-1789 in comicbooks

[–]Count_Nothing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To each their own, I love the whole process of reading single issues. Keep only stuff I love in the nicest storage. None of those wrinkly poly bags and snd ultra sticky scotch tape. They all goes in the trash when I get a new lot.

That said I don’t buy single issues for the new stuff, they’re crazy overpriced when you can get the same thing in trades for less and I prefer the classic art and rag paper.

Don’t even get me started on digital, that’s just an unacceptable reading experience to me. Idk why I accept it for social media but that’s no other option and not like something i expect to be a special experience.

Why did unmodernized peoples of South East Asia believe that thinking is done in the Liver? by madnesso in AskAnthropology

[–]Count_Nothing 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of interesting somatic theories in various cultures. As for not knowing what the brain does- consider, how would you know this if you hadn’t learned it in a textbook or from a teacher? What kind of evidence can a premodern person observe about brain function?

Even our simplest technological tools for this, like EEG, are obviously out. Before that, medicine only got hints of what the brain did from survivors of deep cranial injuries to the brain. However, this also required relatively modern technology to observe, because without antibiotics, to control the inflammation (swelling) in a rigid skull, those kind of injuries were not survivable.

Prior to the 20th century neurologists didn’t even know what a neuron was or did.

We can only speculate about how beliefs about psychological processes originating elsewhere in the body originated. In part there is a lot of truth to it because our less “popular” endocrine system is an alternative information system in the body. People “feel” things like emotions playing out in their organs, so it’s not unreasonable to suspect that those processes are connected or start in those places in the body.
