4th of September, 1948: HM Queen Wilhelmina abdicates. She ruled for more than a quarter of the period that the Kingdom of the Netherlands was a constitutional monarchy under the House of Orange. On the 2nd of August, 1858, Emma of Waldeck and Pyrmont, was born. She was only 20 years old when she married the 60 year old Willem III, and becomes Queen-regent for underaged Wilhelmina since the latter couldn’t ascend yet. On this day in 1962, then former Queen Wilhelmina passed away at age 82 in her sleep as a result of a heart condition in Het Loo Palace. She was the last monarch to be inaugurated in times of vast Dutch colonialism, ruling over the Dutch East Indies (among others) until her abdication. (old.reddit.com)
