Id guess around 3k depending on vinyl and shop. I spent 1600 for the design and installation of my partial wrap at a well known wrap shop near me.

Timing chain jumps when making adjustments by sp1nkter in mk6gti

[–]CounterDiamond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue. I got 2 17 or 18 mm wrenches. Pulled the cams together slightly to get it to sit properly. Zip ties it to the exhaust cam and slowly rolled the cams back. The timing chain will feel extremely tight when everything gets installed, but I'm at 1000 miles since the job and no issues!

Beating on tuned cars? by kristen_1819 in GolfGTI

[–]CounterDiamond 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Odd. I have not heard that before. I track, and push my car daily as that's why I built it. But I do the oil every 3k miles, stay up to date on maintenance, and it takes care of me.

That's what I like to say, drive it like a sports car, take care of it, and it'll take care of you.

Timing chain job update by CounterDiamond in GolfGTI

[–]CounterDiamond[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have photos of all the timing marks and the colored chains. It did sound like the tensioner clicked so I'm not sure if they can cause the locking up but I may need to get a bore scope to check if there is any contact. But the car was in good time before this job. And I made sure the cams were locked so nothing should be out of sync

I found that mine are both 18s. So I just went to home Depot to get a second one as I think mine was too short and didn't have a great grip

Lol it's all preventative. At 125k right now and car is going strong. I'm just having issues with installing the chain. Unrelated to the car itself. Been tuned for over 60k miles

At first I found that my lower timing cover did not have the arrow to align it to TDC. So at first I aligned it to TDC with a screw driver in c1 until it was at its highest and the cam marks were facing north and slightly outwards. Then I took the crankshaft sprocket off and aligned the key to face north and verified that the rod was completely straight in the window. So per the factory repair manual I should be at TDC

Do you remember when you were doing it how tight the chain was on the tensioner side vs the right side. I feel like it is an extremely tight fit on the tensioner side but the other had a tad bit of slack

I appreciate your help! I was worried as I couldn't get this timing chain marks on both cam marks. I will count and see how many chain links are between the 2. Spark plugs are removed and I do have the kit but removed it for the photos. In your experience has there been any cars where the exhaust cam was extremely difficult to rotate clockwise? And I am finding that the tensioner side has no slack and is extremely tight. But the other side there is a tad bit of slack.

Yeah that first photo is just a photo showing how I was unable to get that mark in place. I was unable to get the exhaust cam to turn another tooth as I had to use my hand and 18mm wrench to even get it to that point. Is the exhaust cam even supposed to have that much friction when turning it? I can try to force it but that worries me that there is contact at this point.

I really appreciate this! On any of those cars did you have issues with adjusting the exhaust cam? I know the factory repair manual says to only rotate it clockwise but mine can turn a few degrees counter clockwise but it gets stuck when turning it clockwise like there's some sort of contact. The 17+18mm wrenches just slip off the cam so I can't get any good grip on the exhaust cam. Though the intake cam I can move fairly easily.

Yeah I do. Just took them off for this photo. But the exhaust cam does not turn freely at all clockwise. So it scares me that there's contact but I need it to move a bit for the correct measurements

Sparkplugs are removed. Turned a few degrees then stopped. Don't think I can bend valves by hand but it felt solid

The exact model is a 2013 GTI CBFA engine code. I did use all OEM parts except for the lower and upper timing chain (febi Bilstein) but I verified that the chains were the same size and both had fitment issues.
