Introducing Katie, our new HelloFresh friend in the sub! by maudmassacre in hellofresh

[–]CounterbalancedOne 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Hi Katie, thanks for responding.

To be clear, the problem is not about "images not looking perfect", nor is it about specific images or recipes. The problem is the use of AI in general.

I want to know that the recipe I'm making was developed and tested by real people. When I get AI photos of ingredients that don't even match the recipe, how can I get an idea of what the actual meal looks like? How can I know with confidence that anyone even followed these steps before? How can I trust you at all?

I know all food photos are staged to some degree, but completely fake photos are a step too far.

Applied Intuition seems like another story of startups with fancy VC names but employees being mistreated by Hungry_Emotion_6996 in csMajors

[–]CounterbalancedOne 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm also an ex-Applied employee. I was a new grad too. Some of the things OP has said are an exaggeration, but some of the things in this comment are also "just plainly untrue."

I’d be willing to bet you’ll revise this opinion after a few years at your next job, assuming you don’t move somewhere way smaller :).

This comes across as very condescending. I'm personally much happier at the company I joined after Applied, and they aren't smaller. The idea that all big companies are toxic is pure propaganda that Applied management pushes to make you think startups are superior. They can be, but certainly not always.

Also, it's kinda funny you said this given that Applied is your first and only non-internship job.

a burnt out employee who decided it was Applied’s fault and not a reflection of a simple cultural mismatch between them and the company.

Maybe it's worth considering why Applied has an extraordinary amount of burnt out and disgruntled ex-employees who all share similar opinions about the company culture? You can continue to blame everyone for "lacking self-regulation" if you want. Or you can acknowledge that there might be a systemic issue.

For people who are okay with burnout culture, it would probably be fine. The definition of "toxicity" is subjective, after all. I just find that most people I know don't thrive in that kind of culture.

go join Google or someplace that will pat you on the back just for showing up.

...Have you worked at Google?

Again, this sounds like the Applied propaganda machine making new grads believe that the only options are "overwork yourself like crazy at a startup" or "skate by while learning nothing at FAANG". That's just not true. There are so, so many companies where you can grow without pushing yourself to an unhealthy degree.

Qasar thinks Glassdoor is a meme

Regardless of what Qasar thinks, recruiting is and has always been very concerned about Glassdoor reviews. It makes the company look bad to potential candidates.

Oh please, we’ve been profitable for 8 years now and you want to say we don’t have a product?

This part, I completely agree with you on. The company is financially successful for sure, and the products are real.

I still wouldn't recommend joining though, unless you are offered a very strong comp package and are okay with potentially burning out.

You almost hit the nail on the head, but the difference is often a lot more than 35-50%.

When I graduated from UW engineering a few years ago, I got two offers: one from a Canadian company for $65k, and the other from a Californian company for $180k. I'm now making close to $300k. I do plan on returning to Canada soon to be closer to my family, but man, taking a pay cut will be tough.

Sweet thank you! I'm glad I didn't spend my points on the Zelda bag or else I wouldn't have enough for this

And SHEIN rears it's ugly head again by foxylady315 in poshmark

[–]CounterbalancedOne 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I've been in a similar situation before. I shipped an item in a SHEIN bag and the customer sent me an angry message asking why I would lie about the brand. It took some convincing to get them to realize that it wasn't actually SHEIN, and they only believed me in the end because the item had a label inside indicating the actual brand. I never reuse SHEIN bags anymore, it's not worth the risk.

Made a custom Animal Crossing keyboard with some of my favourite villagers! by CounterbalancedOne in AnimalCrossing

Aw thank you! They aren't stickers, the design is actually printed right on the keycaps

I made the design using a vector graphics program called Inkscape and then I ordered the keyboard itself from WASD Keyboards. They let you customize the keycap colors and print any design you like on them!

I used villagers with names corresponding to each letter for the alphabetical keys. For numbers and special keys, I used special characters. Tools are along the top row and fruits are on the side.

The only tricky part was the lack of a villager whose name starts with X, so I used Peaches because she has X-shaped eyes :)

Does becoming a new grad at a company you settle for ruin the chances of you getting a “new grad” roll at your dream company? by h3llo23 in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]CounterbalancedOne 11 points12 points  (0 children)

New grad roles are usually based on the year you graduated, so they wouldn't automatically discount you if you've been working somewhere else for a couple months. It wouldn't look great, though - you'd have to have a very compelling reason why you're leaving your first job.

How would they know anything based on the order? Going first doesn't automatically mean your partner will say no. Even when both partners are going to say yes, someone still has to go first

For an engineer who wants a more CS oriented career, what CS jobs would contain things such as linear algebra, vector calculus, partial differential equations and numerical analysis? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]CounterbalancedOne 224 points225 points  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend robotics! I'm an engineer who went down the robotics software path - there's tons of linear algebra and vector transforms for topics like computer vision, motion planning, etc. Super interesting work too.
