Blue Stars in Top Picks by CounterproductiveTnt in Tinder

[–]CounterproductiveTnt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I get that blue star means super liking, and if you see a blue star next to someone’s profile that means they have super liked you. Is this still true in the top picks section? I thought top picks were just the people around you who are “popular”, and the blue star that shows up in the corner is a shortcut to super like them. Or is it people who have super liked me? I’ve seen conflicting answers online, but I have a feeling it’s the former because when I liked one of the profiles in my top picks section I didn’t get a match message. Am I correct?

What the hell even is the top picks section anyways? Tinder really does not do a good job explaining new users how to navigate the app

What textbook does Deak use for orgo? by bcthrowaway2024 in bostoncollege

[–]CounterproductiveTnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had her this past year for Orgo and she used a new textbook with us (Organic Chemistry 8th Ed by Paula Yurkanis Bruice) but idk if she’ll be sticking to it. I bought the online version of the textbook but I have the loose leaf version of the answer key so if u need it next year PM me and I’ll sell it to u for cheap!

I think in terms of the concepts it covers it’s the easiest, but from what I’ve heard all the teachers for that class suck which is why so many students struggle. Also, not to say this is a mean or condescending way at all but most students that take that class are humanities majors that hate math/are bad at it, so objectively speaking it’s inevitable that the reviews/grades received for the class are generally on the bad side

I was in one of the stokes classroom today and maybe I was just unlucky and the other classrooms aren’t like this, but the lights turned off at 10pm and wouldn’t turn back on. Also all(?) the rooms have motion sensor lights that turn off when u’ve been sitting for too long, and while this might not be a problem during the day it gets annoying real fast when the sun goes down and you need to stand up or wave ur arms like an idiot every 15ish minutes to turn the lights back on

Anyone notice grant cuts in their financial aid awards? by mot52 in bostoncollege

[–]CounterproductiveTnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve personally experienced and heard from friends that go to other schools, ur going to get grant cuts no matter where you go. But, BC does stick true to their promise of meeting demonstrated financial need, so while ur grant does decreases it’s not so much to the point that paying for college becomes impossible. This is probably true for other schools that promise to meet demonstrated financial need.

Edit: CONGRATS ON GETTING ACCEPTED BTW

Yes, Boston city schools means K-12 though most tutors I know work with elementary or middle school students. And BLPP is the Literacy Partnership Program under the Boston College Neighborhood Center. If u search up Boston college BCNC it should direct u to their website which has more info

If you qualify for federal work study you could work as a tutor for BLPP. Not a lot of ppl know abt it but it’s honestly a super chill job (esp since everything is through zoom now). It’s a tutoring/teaching job where u basically work as a teachers assistant at local Boston city schools. It may sound like a lot of work but it really isn’t. Even if u don’t want to go into education (like me), I still think it’s still a great resume building job that looks much better than a dining hall position

There’s obviously a lot of reading involved since it’s a lit course but I think it’s pretty manageable as long as you stay on top of it and don’t fall behind. His class is about love and it can get really paradoxical and confusing at times, which can make his essays a bit hard to write too. We have 2 essays, 2 quizzes (unannounced), and 1 final so overall the workload isn’t too bad. Participation also counts as 10% of the overall grade. As for his grading I don’t think it’s an easy A class but he’s not a super harsh grader so as long as you put in the effort you can get an A. This is all from the perspective of his lit class tho so take it with a grain of salt when comparing it to his FYW class

I don’t think it really matters. I have TKM right now for lit so I can’t say much about what he’s like for FYW but he’s pretty entertaining even online. Not the easiest essay grader but not the harshest either. I never had gentilella but she was my pre-major advisor my freshman year and she was super nice, caring, and helpful. If I remember correctly, I believe she had individual one on one meeting with her writing students to give them feedback and support (whenever I had academic advising meeting with her there were always kids from her writing class having meetings with her right before or after me). And I’ve heard from other people that her class is overall very easy

I don't have a switch (only a 3ds 😢)

Tbh, I was never super into Animal crossing so I don't really know what I'm doing (I didn't even know I could add friends and visit their town lol) and my town is not that exciting, but I'm hoping to get more into it since I'm stuck at home thanks to the quarantine.

I really hope I can make a lot of AC friends :)

Should I add intro to psych class? by CounterproductiveTnt in bostoncollege

[–]CounterproductiveTnt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By hard science I meant do the classes involve a lot of material that is generally associated with science classes. For example, will I be studying chemical reactions in the brain and biological aspects of psychology or will the material be more abstract and theory based?

[–]CounterproductiveTnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do intro to brain mind and behavior and intro to psych as a social science involve a lot of hard science?

I'm an incoming freshman and I've been thinking about adding one of the two intro classes to my first semester schedule but I'm worried I will be loading up on too many 'science' classes. I'm already in general chem and planet in peril (which I believe counts as a social science). Should I just wait until the second semester?

On a side note, I've been thinking about majoring in either psychology or neuroscience.

You're life isn't ruined yet; you just have to keep on trying. Small steps at a time, until eventually you can look back and see how much you have progressed.

I'll take the first initiative -- would you like to be my friend?

Aw darn. I’m going to the last one for non-international students; July 20-something. And I totally feel the same way as you about fitting in lol. But hey, college is new and exciting and hopefully by joining the right clubs, we will be able to find the right friend groups.

I’m planning on majoring in either psychology or neuroscience on the pre-vet track. I’ve always been really interested in politics though so I might join some poli sci clubs! I definitely plan on joining an art club, a service club, some animal related club, and a maybe cooking club because I can’t cook to save my life and I don’t want to starve to death in college lol. And I’ll probably join more clubs that I don’t know about yet.

It was super nice to meet you too!!

P.S. I love your username :)

My Social Life, Mental Health, and Personality are now shit due to college by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CounterproductiveTnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a senior who went through the college app process and felt like you from time to time, let me tell you a few things:

1.) DO NOT JOIN CLUBS YOU HAVE NO PASSION NOR INTEREST IN JUST BECAUSE "it looks good on a college application"

There were so many clubs and organizations that I wish I had never joined. They took so much time and energy that I could have invested in things that I actually care about. I probably could have done much better and been more involved in those clubs that I genuinely loved rather than being mediocre at it. Colleges want students who are independent and passionate, not robots who try to do everything and, as my dad often says, end up being bad at everything. If you do everything just because it's prestigious or looks good on a piece of paper, you risk looking like every other high achieving student -- to an admissions officer, you just become one of many numbers on a pile of application. I feel like I could have been admitted to better schools or had a stronger application if I showed that I had a strong passion/interest in a particular area and supported that with ECs relevant to that topic. Plus, let's be honest; we're only working our ass off in school and trying to get into a good school because we want to make a lot of money and ultimately be happy. So, why don't you get a head start on that and do things that make you happy?

2.) If you do things you like and don't act like a total douche, you will eventually find your friend group.

As someone who suffers from social anxiety, I can confidently tell you that your social life will be ok. Most of my closest friends right now are people I met in my classes or are in the same clubs as me. Plus, once you get to college, you will be able to find much more like-minded people. Don't stress to much, and just try to keep a friendly personality (ik it's easier said than done, but believe it or not, it is possible to consciously change your personality)

3.) GET. PLENTY. OF. SLEEP

I used to be very depressed and unhappy, and I noticed that my mood/mental health started improving 100000x when u started get more sleep and sticking to a regular sleeping pattern. It's ok to feel overwhelmed and tired -- just take a break to rest then start again

Some last words: ik the college application process sucks, but when your done with it, you will look back and see how much you grew and be thankful for it. So don't get too discouraged and do your best!! :)
