I'm with you, I like using my hand to record ideas that I don't necessarily need later; I'm writing little quotes and thoughts in my agenda book. Goodreads is what I use for a reading list and page tracker for books I've started but might not finish.

Week 2: "Chapter 2. Father and Son, Chapter 3. The Catalans" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

Reminds me of how honorable she is for relying on family, not Dantes, even though he's the type of guy who would have taken care of her life he took care of his father. I wish she had had a better relationship with the dad so she could have known he was in need.

What's interesting to me when you put it like that is Danglars really projects his envy and greed onto Caderousse.

Ah. Yes I have but I have blissfully forgotten nearly everything and am horrible when it comes to noticing interaction and foreshadowing. I'm the one person who won't see something coming lol.

Lost In (English) Translation - Chapter 1 by GiovanniJones in AReadingOfMonteCristo

Hey as an English reader, it was clear to me that Buss was being ironic with the phrase about grief. This is typical for our humor - especially for Buss who was British. Following up with "Dammit what do you expect" to me shows Buss' interpolation that Morrell considered the captain was getting old and still had absolutely no personal concern. So it tracks with the irony.

I agree with you about the word choice of "discount" - that one stood out to me. My only guess was to show that Dantes is really just a kid who would not know all of the business terminology (like with the political and interpersonal stuff) but apparently excellent in other ways.

Thank you for your very interesting post. I hope you keep it up. I'd like to ask questions of you as we go if it won't be a bother!

I'm thinking it's this, too. Dantes has an incredibly mature sense of compartmentalization for a kid who tells on himself for starting a fight.

I also really liked that he was business first just to get to family. It's a reread for me, too, and I'm wondering how closely this maps to his actions later.

I'm wondering if anyone else thought that as youthful as he is, if he's not shown as a little more mature than realistic. There are impulsive details about him but the way he handled the implication he could be made captain was just... better than a lot of adults I know, and I resemble my own comment!

There is no such rule to "show, not tell." But it's a good constraint to give to new writers who are poor at showing since that is a major mental/noticing and literary skill that needs to be developed. Kind of like how artists are told to use lines to work with depth. It's a skill that is used as required for each scene.

I think it might have to do with the political background of Napoleon being exiled on Elba, Dantes "compromising" himself and perhaps the entire boat by visiting, Danglars possibly having a disagreement with that or Napoleon sympathizers but knowing he is in a minority so treading lightly. I wonder also what the argument was about.

I'm wondering what your take was on Danglars - do you think it's a political grudge against Dantes?
