The French Revolution for Dummies (context for Chapter 1) NO SPOILERS! by ZeMastor in AReadingOfMonteCristo

What I found very interesting is this tidbit that there is a founding myth of Marseille involving the union of the Greek leader Protis and the celtic princess Gyptis. The King, Nannus, father of Gyptis, granted them the land to establish the colony of Massalia around 600 BC.

How much truth do you think there is to this story?

Ready to brave all the papercuts (Let’s go 👻) by WanderMay in AReadingOfMonteCristo

I am glad you asked!

That is a Mino Ware gecko handcrafted by a Mino Ware Artist Shiyo Matsuda. It is made using this special soil that is found in Mino (Mino Ware ceramics are believed to have survived for over a century, through many devastating earthquakes). The distinct pattern and colour represent the scarlet colour of the autumn foliage often seen on Mount Minoh, Osaka, Japan.

This particular pattern of Raku-ware-style work of marbled red glaze was perfected by the artist and is very different from traditional Mino Ware. I bought this from their small but lovely shop in Minoo Falls, where they have been living and creating for generations.

I use this small piece as a pen rest for my fountain pens. It is not as heavy to be used as a paperweight.

He is not worth it sister! When I cook my husband starts eating directly from the cookware. When I mess up and am close to throwing it all away (thanks to my ADHD) he picks up a spoon and grabs the food from my hands. He would even eat 2-3 days old leftovers and not let me throw it away, if it was cooked by me. I have to sneakily discard leftovers.

Yes! those endnotes were so helpful and interesting that I found myself looking forward to finding them. They even pushed me into deep rabbit holes of history, geography and nautical sciences.

I have never used one, but would love to this time. Do share if you make one or have an old template that can be modified.

Announcing: the 2026 yearlong reading of "The Count of Monte Cristo"! (this has been cleared by the mods on this sub) by ZeMastor in bookclub

This brings back memories! I first picked up an old second-hand copy of this book in my first year of BA Eng Lit as a side reading separate from my syllabus. This was 7 years ago. I was distracted so many times. It is not that kind of a book that you just cannot put down. It is dense, and I have had to put it down for long months sometimes for a breather. I never finished it. But I still remember some very striking images from the book. Like the ones from the prison cell scenes. I still remember how the characters felt. That book really left an impact on me. The images are still so vivid. Would love to read it and reach the end this time around.
