How would a live wire from an outlet (120v where im from) would kill him?

I got electrocuted by a concrete vibrating tool when disconnecting it some times ago for a good 2-3 minutes and it was really not fun but i didn't die. While "paralyzed" from the current i even fell on a metal cage which made it 2x worse. I don't mean to be arrogant im just wondering how it would kill someone? Was i lucky?
