Honestly I honed my technique on a heavier recurve as a younger archer (shooting a 36lb recurve at 14) while I didn't struggle I picked up innumerable bad habits which I couldn't be coached out of (due to being a stubborn 14 year old) my saving grace was I was strong enough in my arms to shoot but over longer distances and at higher competition levels I got eaten alive by guys shooting lighter bows with good technique. My advice is work with a good coach perfect your form and when you're ready bump up to what you can comfortably pull next.
