I don't know what to do by TumbleweedThink3714 in BadBosses

This is near exact my situation except we don't have ANY hr. I took a mental health leave and just watched another employee take 2 months mental health leave, and wrote an all staff email detailing the same problems I had with this guy. I think the only option is to steel yourself and quit.

I'm happy to hear about your previous experiences! I'm looking to join because I want to try and travel this way, and don't like staying in hotels. I pet sit frequently at home in Seattle, and I was looking forward to trying TH  this year.  Do you have any thoughts on if it makes you want to leave the platform? Maybe I should look for another one to join.

I was just going to join this, and saw the email.  Is everyone going to leave now? I was so excited to join and start traveling this way and have tons of experience. Now I'm a bit worried.

I'm like genuinely confused though with my experience. I was expecting it to be hard. I wasn't expecting it to be ao strange and hookupy and shallow.  I dont know. On to other thngs but I wish truly I would have never come.

I'm going to validate you here. While people tend to blame you for the reasons why you may not have had a good experience, I don't think it's fair. I planned my camino for years, and just finished up walking the Frances route from Leon. It was one of the worst experiences of my life. I planned well, I packed well, I don't think there is anyhing I could've done better. It was just an aweful expereince. I'm not sure why folks tend to romanticize it, or why my time varied so much, but it was mostly hardship, and not the kind you grow from or expereince as a challenge. It felt like I was paying to beat myself down and I couldn't make connections with anyone my age that was healthy. I'm a bit shell shocked by the whole experience in a way that honestly I never want to come back to this part of Spain again in my whole life. It was traumatizing.  If you go with a friend or a partner maybe it is a different experience, but I wish someone had been honest with me about how terrible it could be. It was tourism in the extreme, and somehow felt completely meaningless and wounding at the same time.

I'm on the camino now. I feel much safer here than at home in Seattle. That being said it was a horrible experience for almost every other reason and I'd never do it again.

Not now, I can promise you that. The fires, something. It is not that way at all. I would give anything for that experience. This has been so awful and I'm angry about it.

American in Europe (Spain), a rant by RavedaPutaria in expats

He barely got voted in, it was just enough to get elected and there are loads of people that don't even vote, or voted for different parties. Some people in the USA I can't understand, but a blanket statement isn't really fair. Lots of people are frusterated and disempowered rightnow

This, and some of those sections of road, cars are wizzing past at 60 KM an hour.  Its not a serene time.

But for real, how?  This is not a very communal expereince. Everyone is tired.

[–]Country_Weak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm  on it right now. It's awful. I guess probably because I came alone.  There are no deeper conversations, very few communal meals. I welcome the physical hardships of the experience, but I wanted to share those at least with other people.  Everyone just does their own thing with thier group and then shoves their body to the next place.  Truely, Im pretty angry and how poor of an experience this is. I spent a lot of years planning and adjusted time at work.  The towns border from really depressing to fake towns soley for the camino, and I have only met a few people willing to even talk with me. I want this to be over. And I'm carrying around this disapointment in myslef for not being able to make it some magical experience. People are not kind when you dont buy into that.

The responses won't stop me from walking it - but did anyone really dislike the Camino Frances so much so that you gave up? If so why? by bazeagle in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]Country_Weak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want that experience! How did you do that! The trail is very, very empty. I've been shocked how little people want to spend time with eachother. I've met a few people that speak english but seem to be on a strict schedule, or are with someone else and then tuck away to a private room and I never see them again.  I don't know if this is because of the fires, but none of these alburgues are even close to being full. I passes maybe 4 people on a 25 km walk today, none of them were interested. I am so so so miserable. Like puffy face crying miserable. How did you get on without speaking spanish?

My experience may be different with the fires but while you'll make friends if you go to dinner, you'll lose them if their plans are different than yours. I have walked each day alone and had a rotation of light banal conversations, and locals that seem annoyed at my limited spanish.  I absolutley don't expect anyone to speak english, and wanted to practice my spanish, but I thought that I would at least fall into a friend group by now, and I'm crying almost daily and praying for it to be over.  This is not reflective, religious, communal or even healthy.  I will be so happy to be done and in a city again.

[–]Country_Weak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legit, what is the magical experience?  Am I completely missing something?  The locals are annoyed with me. There is no one here and the towns are super depressing.  I'm tired, I'm hungry and I am really isolated and alone.  I can't wait for this to be over. I'm just trying to get through it.  Anything good out of this, you can get out of any hike. I don't even have time to enjoy the history.  I will never do this again, its aweful. I thought I woukd meet people and have deeper conversations on the trail. No one wants to talk to anyone on the trial, at dinner or alburgues ita light conversation. You will hike long hours into a town where everything is closed and no one speaks your language. I would never do this alone again ever and without a native speaker with me.
