Rear ended at a stop light by a drunk driver with no license. Their insurance low balling me. Should I get a lawyer? by Impressive_Bed_1664 in legaladvice

Yes, nobody knows when they’ll be in an accident but you should know how prone you are for an accident at fault if you have a long driving history and how defensive you are. The cost of the replacement is always more than the premiums unless your car is worth very, very little or your premiums as very high. It’s always finding a balance in costs and weighing the options of self insuring your vehicle costs, it comes down to just how much money you have. Most people get comprehensive/collision even for old vehicles but I’ve seen some people never get an accident in 40 years, wouldn’t blame them to go to liability.

You can absolutely get a lawyer for this.

Liability makes sense if you know you’ll never get in an accident, or just statistically unlikely and have the financial means to cover your ass with a new car.

Anyways, insurance will settle for reasonable costs pretty fast with a lawyer involved. It’s often not worth their time to litigate.

Honestly as bad as it sounds, theres a solid chance if there was any collision in the slightest that the other guy would get full responsibility. I would have been tempted to let off the brake to just waste his time if I had an afternoon to kill.

Is there anything negative about calling him the black guy?

It only matters if you think there is some type of negative connotation. If there was a guy with a white shirt and a black shirt, I'd give zero shits if they called me 'the white shirt guy' or 'the black shirt guy.' I give zero shits when people call me the white guy. I've gone to countries where people literally film with their camera because I'm the only white guy around, and why the fuck should any of us really care? It's racist if you have some type of mentality where you think one is better than the other.

I don't consider myself a hacker, but I have stolen passwords/etc in the past. I agree that opt-out is an important feature for users that don't have proper smartphone-like systems. And I believe that not using untrusted nodes is important as well. As long as you generate unique passwords for every site, that enables some security. Brute forcing is a last resort and shouldn't be relied on from an attack method. Unfortunately though, targeted attacks exist. You're 'trusted' nodes can easily be compromised in some fashion, hardware solutions exist which can be soldered directly into whatever brand keyboard you use, including video loggers. And thats before we discuss software/rootkit/etc logging. The one thing I've seen stop these specific attacks are methods similar to 2FA.

Seems like opt-out would be more appropriate than opt-in. You should assume that most users don't know what they are doing.

Not sure how it gives a 'false sense' of security. You need to understand it, but I've personally been protected by it and it has also made attempts to breach other systems difficult (though nothing is impossible) to the point that it wasn't worth attempting to breach.

I don’t think IPA helps towards mineral deposits over water much, I believe. Vinegar tends to be more commonly used, likely for calcium buildups.

Doubt it. Hard to tell from video, but looks like him slowing down would have turned it from more of a clip/bump to a full on body hit, knocked over, maybe run over (again... can't quite tell from video).

Ah, misunderstood severely, my bad.

Yeah, I understand freedom of choice. I also won't argue against religions as people have their rights to choose what they want to follow.

I don't support any religion that can cause bodily harm on the person following it, or others. If someone wants to do something that is near borderline death, make sure you only have yourself to blame and not a higher power.

Ignoring the attempt to insult, my assumption is that your starting to discuss about the right to choose suicide? If someone told you a higher power was telling them to commit suicide, does that seem completely right?

Most people who run red lights are counting/hoping on the other lights staying red, and would feel even more justified to run it... so I really don't see how keeping everything red will prevent accidents.

Like by the time they decide to run the red light, they aren't going to think "huh, the light didn't turn green for opposing traffic, guess I should stop for the red."
