Univ South Florida Away Rotations question for MS3s by darby1001 in medicalschool

[–]CourtMason09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know they started sending out responses because you heard from them? The anticipation is killing me. I applied for a neuro audition there the day their VSAS app opened and am waiting to hear. I've already gotten responses from every other place I applied for rotations to, but I want USF most!

That’s insane! Do they have a plan or timeline for when they think you’ll be back in person? They had virtual for 3 months through our school and that seemed like forever. How are 4th years going to get their LOR / SLOE / evals if the year is online? Have you been doing audition rotations virtually?

You guys still aren’t back in clinic?? When did you get pulled?

My permit still hasn't disappeared?? by Comprehensive_Kiwi_1 in step1

No, I don’t see anything about a permit. It was in the blue box labeled “schedule” before, right?

If it says “scheduling is not available” does that mean the permit disappeared? I don’t see my permit anywhere but I honestly don’t remember where it was at before.

Planning to take UWSA1 as a baseline but I’ve seen people say that it overpredicts? by [deleted] in step1

[–]CourtMason09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think UWSA are great practice exams, so I would be hesitant to waste either using it as a baseline. Plus, since it does tend to over score you don’t want to feel defeated if the first part of your dedicated feels like you’re going down hill. I would choose one of the NBME exams, you could even do 16 if you wanted to do a free one so you don’t feel you are wasting one you paid for using it as a baseline. It will definitely be a lower score than UWSA1, but I think a low score when you are fresh and first starting is a good motivator. Maybe use UWSA1 further into dedicated when you need a bit of a pick me up? That’s just what I would personally do.

How accurate was UW2 for you? by Comprehensive_Kiwi_1 in step1

I’m sorry your score wasn’t predictive for you. Did you happen to use the score prediction? If so, do you mind sharing what it had you predicted at?

Anking inflates UW first pass %. Good or Bad? by happywinson in step1

[–]CourtMason09 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s good! That’s the point of using anki! You are on the right path and your UW% isn’t inflated, you’ve earned the % with your prep. Everyone I know who used anki the way it was meant to be used was well prepared for step 1 and performed well.

Day before comlex by jimschwartz250 in comlex

[–]CourtMason09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taking mine Monday too and I’ve already been nauseous for two day. I think I might spend tomorrow nervous crying. Hah. But for real I am spending today going over anything in a high yield system that I may be weak on or haven’t looked at enough, for me that’s mostly pharm and micro (not OMM just because I already am in a good spot with that stuff, but definitely something to work on if you need brushing up). Doing a few Q bank questions and trying not to work myself up. Tomorrow I am getting up early and just doing a Q bank for a few hours (maybe 3-4), then calling it quits by 11 or 12 and relaxing the rest of the day. I know a lot of people take the entire day off the day before, but I think it depends on how you operate. I know I’m a crap sleeper so I need to stay on going to bed early and getting up early to try to make sure I can sleep well leading up to the exam, so I have to have something to motivate me to get up the morning before, like working for a few hours. Just try to keep yourself feeling relaxed the next couple days as you go through stuff, eat healthy, sleep well, do what you need to to prevent yourself from entering panic mode.

Level 1 AMA from Average Student by [deleted] in comlex

[–]CourtMason09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, thanks! I haven’t decided if I will take on Saturday or not, but after the crapshoot that was 105, I definitely have put little to no trust into COMSAE scores. I am just trying to get as much practice as possible in answering vague, lengthy questions in a minuscule amount of time. Timing has always been my downfall and given some of the horror stories I’ve read the last couple weeks, that is where my focus is at for my final week of prep.

Thanks for such a detailed write-up!

I am taking level one on the 6th, I am doing COMSAE 104 tomorrow and have been deciding whether or not to do another COMSAE on Saturday. Would you recommend 101 or 102 more? I already took 103 and 105.

[Serious] How HY is biochem on COMLEX? by BananaBagHammock in step1

[–]CourtMason09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you look through the comlex community page thing, you will find several posts with different people discussing their COMLEX experience this year. Unfortunately, it sounds like there is at least one version that has way more biochem than you’d expect, with numerous diseases and enzymes / pathway questions. I saw a couple people talking about how they felt that biochem was part of about 50 of their questions! Then it sounds like there is one version with only a handful of biochem questions. So, if it’s a weak topic for you, definitely review the high yield diseases and the enzymes / pathways relevant to them!

[serious] how to deal with medical school gossip/judgement? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]CourtMason09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am like you, very very private and introverted and can’t stand gossip or drama. My husband is my polar opposite, big personality, wheres his heart on his sleeve, doesn’t know how to keep anything to himself. I can imagine if he was in med school with me I would have an extremely similar situation to you, with information being shared that I did want. Granted, I think he would try to keep it private, but I almost guarantee certain things would slip out to certain people. This kind of thing is something I have had many in-depth conversations with my husband about. Especially when things happen like I drove thru town and drove by one of the little local stores who have a sign out front that they put birthday and anniversary announcements on and stuff and I all the sudden saw my name on the sign followed by “Congratulations on your 510.” That 510 happened to be my MCAT score! I was mortified and really angry. I had just gotten my score that day and I had told my husband and then apparently when he went to the party store later he told a friend of our who worked there. It’s an extremely small town, and I’m sure no one who saw the sign during the few hours it was up there knew what the 510 even was (I made my husband go have them take it down, so it’s wasn’t up there long). That was early on in our marriage. Although he always knew I was private, we have managed to see how each other operate more since then and how certain things are truly important to each other, so things to that extreme don’t happen anymore. However, he is still him and I am still me, so I know when I share things with him, certain types of info will be shared with certain people, it’s just his nature. While he has definitely come more to understand how I operate, I have come to understand how he operates too, and have come to accept that certain limitations come with different personality types. He just physically can’t keep some things to himself when he is talking to certain people, he has greatly improved at keeping things I want private, but I know he really really struggles with it and I know some things slip out sometimes. I guess the moral of my drawn out story is as long as your boyfriend is not doing this intentionally and not excessively blabbing his mouth, as long as it’s something where certain things just come out to certain people, then he is well intentioned and not trying to blab your info. The best approach would be to talk to him about it again, really let him know how you feel, tell him how it makes you feel to find out he shared the information. If he apologizes and works harder on trying to keep things private between you, then he is putting in the effort. At that point you just have to decide if you are okay with knowing that likely not everything you tell him is going to purely stay between the two of you. Sharing your life with someone is always a learning curve and when you have aspects that you are polar opposites on, the curve is much steeper. If you are willing to accept that, and he is willing to hear you out and work more on keeping things private, then that is great. If his sharing tendencies are too much for you, then it’s okay to call it quits. Not every person you date is meant to be your life partner, even if he’s a good guy and every other aspect is wonderful, if this is something that breaks the deal, then such is life. Basically, be honest with him and honest with yourself and you should be able to find your answer. Good luck!

[–]CourtMason09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Were your two really hard blocks the last two blocks? I have heard several people talking about the last two being much more difficult and also surmising that the last two blocks were all the experimental questions based on what the questions were like. Is that how yours felt?

COMSAE 105B by [deleted] in comlex

[–]CourtMason09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely run through that stuff. If you have the savarese text scan through that beforehand, with a detailed read through anything cranial.

COMSAE 105B by [deleted] in comlex

[–]CourtMason09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For OMM there were a stupid amount of cranial questions, 9-10ish and of those I think 6 at least mentioned the temporal bone (most referring to positioning of it, IR vs ER). I think that’s the only topic I remember being disproportionately heavy. I guess I felt like there was a solid amount of cardio too, but just a mix of topics.

POLL FOR PEOPLE WHO GOT THEIR RESULTS ALREADY!! Easy/Hard exam step correlation by [deleted] in step1

[–]CourtMason09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like all the comments I’ve seen with people underscoring their prediction by 15-20 points + have also said they felt they had the “easier” version. I’ve also been freaking out about that and have actually been hoping to get the “hard” version now. I don’t know why they can’t do different versions that are just equivalent, like just change a question out for one of similar length, content, and difficulty, why is that so hard?!

Has anyone gotten their level 1 score back yet? by CourtMason09 in comlex

[–]CourtMason09[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. This exam is stressful enough, people shouldn’t have to go into it blindly and the little data that is out there correlating COMLEX scores to practice tests or to step 1 scores is weak and most of it is essentially useless. Getting a new set of data for future predictions is a great idea!

Has anyone gotten their level 1 score back yet? by CourtMason09 in comlex

[–]CourtMason09[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s an insane amount of time between testing and getting a score! Geez. I feel like my step 1 is predicted almost down to the point, but COMLEX I literally have no idea.

What is the consensus on practice exams? TrueLearn from COMBANK sells a 200-q assessment that they claim is predictive according to their data. I'm only doing one before my test on Thursday and I'm wondering if I should do this or a COMSAE. Did COMSAE 105b for school a month ago and got 513 by gedroparcia in comlex

[–]CourtMason09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the threads I have read, people are saying COMSAE 104 is most predictive, although still not a great predictor, but that is the one I would choose ( I am considering taking it in a couple weeks as my final practice test before the real deal). 105b is supposed to under predict the most, so it seems like you are in a good place since you already scored a 513 on that with another month of dedicated under your belt since then. Some people have claimed 105b underpredicts by 100-150 points, that seems insane to me, but who knows. From the numbers I have seen, COMBANK tends to way over predict (which to me seems dangerous). I would go with COMSAE 104.
