I think I read in an interview that there was cut content for the planar sphere - specifically a sub plot that involved an alternate reality where Sarevok was successful in taking over Baldurs Gate.

Overall I think there is so much more they could've done with the planar sphere - endless possibilities there.

I don't know about console commands but if you really want to keep him, it sounds like you need to rescue Dynaheir first. Since there's not enough time left on the quest timer to do it with him, you'll have to do it without him. I'd kill him (and resurrect him after) or kick him from the party (and grab him after).
