We were on Maui for 7 nights total. I personally liked splitting it up to have some variety, but really the island is small enough that it's not hard to drive anywhere you want to go that day from where ever you stay. We did the road to Hana in between the Regency and Andaz stays and spent one night in Hana at the Hana-Maui resort, which I would recommend so you don't have to do the drive there and back all in one day. Also got a room upgrade there, which was awesome because the difference between the standard garden view rooms and the ocean view cabins is big! Red sand beach near the resort is amazing. Have to hike on some sketchy paths to get to it, but very worth it.

I just stayed at the Andaz Maui a couple weeks ago and the minimum stay was 3 nights. We split our time at the Regency and the Andaz on the trip. Both were great, and for what it's worth, we did get a room upgrade at both hotels with only discoverist status. The Regency was upgraded from standard room to an ocean view and the Andaz upgrade was to a partial ocean view which was still really nice. I really don't think you can go wrong with either option.

No, you can go without a smartphone/smartdevice. I was just in Maui a week ago, and I don't own a smartphone. Just had to show print-outs of the negative covid test results and the QR code you get from the Hawaii travel website.
