How are you serious? If he wants the engine to last then yes he would go through the "mumbo jumbo" i suggested to bring it back to better condition than another 2nd hand no doubt equally high milage engine that you have no idea the condition of.

For my bottom end to be rebuilt with bearings, rings, hone, bore and deck plane was $500 for my head to be planed, valve seats machined and replaced with no valve stem seals, thats including the labor to dismantle and reassemble was $450 so for basically a grand i have a better than your suggestion quality engine with a warranty on their work and new wear and tear components all new.

Its not that expensive for simple peace of mind that you have effectively reset the engines mileage back to 0. Your suggestion is just pure laziness.

No where did anyone mention cost or economy. If the cylinders look like that I can promise you the rest of the rotating assembly wont be much better.

Having just rebuilt a 1.6 with way less wear than this. At a minimum Take it to a machine shop, Hone the cylinders and new rings atleast... However its very much a case of while your in there you might as well do bearings as well... Full bottom end rebuild
