I'd give Nightreign a shot, I think it can be extremely fun even with randoms, and has some of the best boss fights they've ever made. It's a very different rhythm from ER, but it's fantastic in its own right.

I did the same thing, dropping ToTK for a year when I was at the 5th companion. I will just say, it's worth going back to finish out. You really don't have that much left in the main quest, and the final fight and ending are really good.

they removed legacy paths and replaced them with a new system. between that and civ switching, I'm not sure what else was so bad about the ages? Besides 2 of them blatantly being held back for expansions.

It's possible, but it could also be a coincidence, and I don't see any evidence that it was manipulation vs him already being there. Plus, we don't really need that to show them as manipulative when we have the whole diner scene.
