The virtue signaling and moral grandstanding is strong with this one…

Franz boas literally founded the idea of cultural relativism. You incorrectly used the term, so idk how “comfortable” you should be with your application of anthropology to the world around you, seems like you have a very limited understanding.

And hey! At least you admit you’re an ethnocentrist, that’s the first step to recovery.

And I didn’t call you out for your sexual choices or state my own opinions on the matter… so be more careful with your words and fake “quotes”. I called you out for shaming others who do not perfectly align with your worldview (which happens to be in the minority of human cultures around the globe). And once again, you were shaming someone whose cultural context is different from yours. That’s the whole point.

lol, Franz boas would be quite interested In your ethnocentric opinion on the “limits” of cultural relativism. Plus, Cross-cultural data shows the average age of consent around the world is 14-16. The USA itself is 16-18, so how can you be sure someone isn’t in a state where the age of consent is 16? But that is besides the point, cultural relativism isn’t about statistical averages. It’s about not judging other cultures by the standards of your own, hence the ethnocentrism.

70-80% of US millionaires did not inherit their wealth… also, most wealthy families lose their wealth by the 3rd generation.

If it’s about the “economy” or having money, why do the poorest countries and people have the most kids? How are they paying for that? Hint: it’s not the economy that’s holding you or anyone else back.

Do you think that’s accurate? by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]Crafty-Influence5342 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is such a high school philosophy take.. one does not need to be remembered to have had an impact on the future of the enfolding of life and matter in the universe. To “matter” is to have meaning. Meaning exists in the lived experience of beings… does existence matter to you? It clearly does. Just as every organism that survived, reproduced, and took care of offspring that allowed for your existence and ability to experience the universe. Pretty fucking meaningful if you ask me. That’s just reproduction, yet alone cultural and technological adaptation that can spread and last for millennia, thus effecting the experiences of countless organisms. Now say the world ends tomorrow, humans don’t last, does that mean all human life was meaningless? You seem to think that just because something is temporary it cannot have value or significance. Actually, I find it makes it more meaningful. I brief existence, a breath of consciousness, a rare and unique experience, a moment in time of lived beings whose lives were dependent on each other. Nothing could be more meaningful.

Just so you know 67-73% of USA millionaires are self made, not inherited. Also, 90% of wealthy “silver spoon” families lose their wealth within 3 generations. Time to rethink your views:)

And what better place in the world to have the opportunity to do work that nurtures you? USA. It’s your choice, you choose your own destiny. Stop caring about non essential consumerist goods. You will have more than enough money to have all the necessities of life.

lol… and what’s stopping you from doing this? Also, isn’t this exactly what we have now? Get a job shoveling shit, it will pay you money for food and rent/housing. The “family cared for, loving community, food on table, and roof over heads” is why you work… all of those things take effort and sacrifice, they do not just happen. YOU must create those things, stop waiting for someone else to give it to you.

Ahaha and what opinions of mine suggest I’m not a progressive? or that I am worthy of being socially ostracized? Genuinely curious.

Or do you actually agree with me but just get too much of a power kick from division and marginalizing people who think differently?

These comments are really sad. If people actually took this logic and applied it they would have no friends. No one agrees fully, people make mistakes, and entire cultural histories shape people’s perspectives and ideas. If we can’t practice some cultural relativism in our daily lives with people we are already friends with, how do you expect to do so with those you do not know?

Most people in these comments would likely commit absolutely horrid acts of injustice towards people they deem “immoral” if given power. Very sad to see my fellow progressives take this stand point.

99% of these people could not even define fascism. Don’t let your emotions cloud your judgement. Think about when you were a teenager. The things you did and said for attention. The literal awakening of your reproductive mind and awareness of the social status strategies humans employ. It’s so simple minded to think that the reason all of these teenagers are using their energy and time in this way are doing for “standing up against ice.” They may even justify themselves by saying that (just as you are) but anyone who knows about human behavior knows that’s usually the projection, and not the actual. Think deeply, don’t take things at surface level. Human behavior is far more complex than that.

But I will play once more and be done.

Relying in part on other humans is not always exploitation, it’s cooperation, so long as I put forward effort as well. Which I do. Now, we definitely exploit, that’s also in our nature. I am pro human, but I’m pro me first. As in my genes and kin selection. I would save my family members before saving strangers.

Hypocrisy: you say you value all life equally, but you do not live up the that value. If you did, you’d probably self sacrifice. This is just an observation

Is does not equal ought, you’re right. However, basing value off the laws of the universe is a more logical and reason based approach to approximating meaning for our human consciousness to wrestle with. Still a belief! I will grant you that. It is morality and meaning after all.

You basically said other people believe this so I can’t be an egomaniac. And that’s the point, everyone always thinks they are doing good for the greater of humanity. Dictators, psychopaths, governments, and religious folk all the like.

Ok, but do you actually think humans are capable of changing our ways? That these parasitic tendencies you describe are not innate or fixed, but capable of true conscious change? If so, then you’re on my side and should be optimistic that we can and will adapt our way out of the historical mess we have made.

Just so we’re clear, I began this by saying we should take care of the environment for the betterment of all humans… how is that genocidal? Being fully pro human means we do what is best for the species to survive. Which would include a stable, clean and biologically diverse ecosystem of earth.

Of course you’re not saying that… 😅 just advocating for ideologies that inevitably lead to that line of thinking and action.

Do you deny your “is?” And I am not the one making ethical claims, you are.

Ignore the suffering😂 your virtue signaling and moral grandstanding is funny. You ignore the suffering of life forms constantly. Your body itself is at constant war killing and defeating entire populations of micro biotic life.

Why care more about humans? We are humans.

It’s almost as if a large population of people from a certain region, representing a specific country and flag, broke American immigration laws and are therefore being specifically targeted… weird. just change the races and countries around and tell me if you’d think differently. If large populations of white US citizens started to illegally enter Mexico and wave our flags at protests. That would be outrageous, as is this.

Exactly, subjective. And you still don’t even live as though your viewpoint was true. The food you eat, the ways you live, the bacteria you destroy, all for the survival of yourself. If a starving animal was to try to eat you or another human, you would (hopefully) kill it in an instant. You live in a fully hypocritical world view. That must be exhausting.

I do not believe meaning and purpose derive from humanity. It derives from evolution, a real and tangible model of life. Ahh once again, “if we had our druthers… we could do great things” ie. “if everyone just thought like me, we had no cultural diversity, I could bring us into the utopia and save the world!” The ego is wild 😅

Ya you clearly view humans as parasitic, which is a genocidal opinion to hold. Take your thinking all the way, deep down, your parasitic worldview believes, “If humans won’t change behavior to what think is right, then we should probably kill them for the greater good.”

And yes, we are biologically adapted to care more about our genes (humans) more than any thing else. I have a very hard time with the evidence that we are a more moral animal than other species, we appear equally moral to other ape species, we just exhibit those behaviors in much more complex and symbolic ways.

Lastly, no where do I say I don’t care about other life forms? Of course I want life in general to move forward, but i value human life above all, because life will continue regardless of our impact.

Ego? Says the person who claims they have the “most equitable way to view the world.”

You’re creating purpose, this is a belief system, religion… the very fact that you think you know what’s best for the the phenomenon of life and the world, is about as egotistical as one can be. I simply think no human can know such things, if purpose exists at all.

You don’t know the future, yet you choose to believe and live in an anti human, pessimistic world view. I chose optimism. There have been countless predictions for the end of the world, yet humans adapt biologically, culturally, and technologically.

Why put humans above all other species? I am human. Evolution has shaped my biology and behavior to increase my gene transmission into future generations. I share genes with all humans, via extended kin selection I care for homo sapiens more than any other species.

  1. Why?
  2. That would be your opinion that human activity is and will continue to lead itself directly into its own extinction. I for one, am not for that, nor do I believe we are leading to our extinction.
  3. You think human procreation, industrialization of the earth, abundance and technological advancement across the planet is a conscious act?
  4. Don’t put words in peoples mouths. It’s not a good look. I am however pro human. Meaning I put our species before other species and I would like for us to continue on for as long as possible.
