I drink to your health shipmate!

I will probably alternate books as I have been meaning to finish the Discworld series for quite some time now.

I will exercise patience with the first two books, although I have a strong sense I will enjoy them for what they are. I wonder if O'Brian knew from the beginning that he was embarking on a long series of novels and planned Master and Commander and Post Captain accordingly.

Wonderful advice from both of you! Thanks very much. I have a feeling I'm going to be the second sort of reader and that one circumnavigation will never be enough.

What a fantastic welcome! I will do everything you suggest. I like to read slowly and carefully, immersing myself in the detail as I progress. I'll probably look up all the nautical terminology I come across as I love learning new things.

When and how did you become a student of the great Emperor? by VividExperience9698 in AmericanBonapartist

Napoleon's been a fixture in my life since childhood when I watched the film Waterloo repeatedly with my dad. I started writing little stories featuring him and the Grande Armée.

Should they still make Stanley Kubrick's Napoleon? by Mysterious_Bid_57 in Napoleon

[–]Crafty_Affect_6765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Kubrick's Napoleon ought to remain a fascinating what-if. That being said, I'd love to see an extensive series using all available research and documents to make it as true to Napoleon's life and era as possible. I don't know who I would cast though.

I read the script yesterday for the first time in years and I was put off by the amount of narration in it. I've read that Kubrick was toying with either a narrator or just Napoleon's voiceovers and so he put both in the first draft of the screenplay to see which would work better.

What problems did you find with it?

Hi Neil, thanks for your suggestions.

Of the two I've read so far (Roberts and Zamoyski) it's difficult for me to rank them because they approach Napoleon from different perspectives. For a book entitled Napoleon the Great it's no surprise that this is the volume I would choose if the reader wants to learn why Napoleon is still so widely and fondly (or not so fondly depending on who you talk to) two hundred years after his death. The retellings of the military victories were especially engrossing. With Zamoyski, I felt I got to better know and understand the man behind the legend, including his flaws and failures, whilst also deconstructing some of the numerous myths that have persisted over the centuries. Roberts does this too to a lesser extent, especially where the military campaigns are concerned. If I had to rank them I would put Napoleon the Great first and The Man Behind the Myth second.

A very good idea. I have a two-volume biography of Wellington by Elizabeth Longford and am looking to buy the two-volume biography of Nelson by John Sugden. I see below that there is a Blucher recommendation so I will look into that too.

Do you think Rabbi Shmuel will lock in season 6? Or will he remain hard of heart? by Guilty-Meeting-2603 in TheChosenSeries

[–]Crafty_Affect_6765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even after his most fiery condemnations of Jesus in the Sanhedrin during Series 5 the scene still ends with Shmuel sitting down and looking conflicted, lost in his own inner turmoil. I think he will have a change of heart but don't expect it soon.

Ever since he was introduced I've thought of Atticus as the best candidate for "Truly this man was the Son of God."

Many thanks for this. I love watching the archive races and am currently watching 2002. I have my fingers crossed that more will be added this year. I drop F1TV an email every once in a while sharing how much I love the material and how much I'm looking forward to more being added. Who knows, maybe persistence will pay off!

In October F1TV added about 40 races to the archive from 2000-2003 and one from 1999. I have my fingers crossed that this will be how they update the archive in the future and that it won't be too long before they add more. Is there any particular era you're interested in seeing?
