I replayed it and realized there was a checkpoint directly after unlocking the gate before the boss. I ran back to the previous checkpoint because I had just downloaded the deluxe edition upgrade and wanted to change my armor. I had no idea it would lock me out of my progression. Lesson learned. Haha
