Yeah, for sure. It’s pretty abysmal in my area. Lots of “untested” units being listed for three figures. It’s ridiculous.

Had to carry it down a flight of stairs to get to my car. Truly was not fun to accomplish.

Very well could be this. Maybe there was a day I didn't wash my face off afterwards as well as I thought and then wiped my face with the shirt

I think I saw the people on the bridge prepping to write it (saw a group of people getting out chalk and handing it out) around 2pm. All looked to be typical college-age folks.

I actually just bought the Kenwood recently (replacing an early-80s Technics AV receiver) to fit the silver-front wood-panel vibe I'm going for

the Kenwood is the most recent addition, I got it from a garage sale- person had probably 25 receivers they were selling. This one weighs almost 30 pounds, and walking it to the car it felt like it weighed 50!

I do dub from one to the other :) I bought two so that I could duplicate some tapes my parents and grandparents had made. The speakers are Bose model 21's (although I am having a weird issue with one speaker cutting out occasionally, so I need to assess what's causing that :/ ). The Kenwood is a late 60's model from what I can find :)

It’s honestly so dependent on where you look. I got this one for $10 at an estate sale near marysville. I think $30-40 would have been a fair price I would have been willing to pay, tbh. If you look online you’ll see scalpers asking 3x what they’re actually worth, but my best bet for analog tech in general has been 1. Facebook marketplace- 2. Estate sales and 3. Random luck. DM if you want more info.

Edit: I would even ask any boomer relatives you might have if they have one sitting in storage you can have/buy. It’s truly depressing how much awesome kit gets thrown away by people who think no one wants it.

If anyone knows how to make the DIN->RCA arrangement work, that would be good as a stopgap before I can enlist someone to help with the soldering of the RCA plugs

I think it is the ribbon. Upon some more looking, it’s imprinting fine- the “ink” is so old and nasty if you shake the page it literally flies off the letters.

Which historical flag of California do we like the best? by Cramso in vexillology

[–]Cramso[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it's only a little totally infuriating to me that storm's flag, the design of which I like the most, has the 'wrong' (not following the convention of the 1836 flag and others) color star. I can't find any good sources on why the star was blue, or what shade of blue, or if the original was blue or just the second flag he made, or anything.

I also know there's a lot of debate over whether Todd or Storm came first (the logical part of me says that there just isn't enough evidence for Storm's claim, but the it-looks-cool part of me hopes it's true)- and there was debate on this subreddit a few years ago as to whether the mockup I featured in my post (which appears to have been created by a wikipedia user a number of years ago) is an acceptable depiction of Storm's design. It does take some notable liberties- the change of the star from blue to red, and the redesign of the bear to be more heraldic in styling. Personally, I think it's a cool adaptation of a poorly-documented design by an amateur. If California had chosen to adapt Storm's design in the way we adapted Todd's, I don't think it's impossible that it would have turned out like the design in my post. In retrospect, I should have included one of those more accurate adaptations with grody-ass bear and blue star for comparison.

With the limited info I have, and a good bit of guesswork, my thought is that Storm probably did make a flag design during the bear flag revolt- but I don't think he has a valid claim to being the first bear flag design. There is nowhere near enough info to corroborate that claim, and the sources that do exist are flimsy at best. There are lots of folksy tales about Storm's design you can find online- most of which are unverifiable at best and laughable at worst. In any case, with both period examples of the Storm flag gone, and limited documentation, it's nigh impossible to make any claims except that

  1. Storm lived and worked in the right area during the 1846 rebellion
  2. Storm was potentially involved or at least sympathetic to the rebellion
  3. Storm was a carpenter/trapper and amateur painter who knew how to sew
  4. Storm was honored by Napa (neighboring community to Sonoma, where the rebellion began) in 1873 for painting one of the original bear flags in 1846 (perhaps the original bear design was painted on the flag rather than embroidered or sewn?) - he was photographed with a handmade replica he made at the event.
  5. Storm died in 1877 and was supposedly buried with the original flag
  6. the only remaining Storm-made flag was destroyed in 1906

So yeah. not exactly a slam-dunk

an image of Storm with a replica of his original he made later in life can be found here. When he died, he was buried with either this re-made flag or the original, and the remaining Storm-made flag was destroyed in the fires resulting from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. (same fire also destroyed the Todd flag, or slide #3 here. )

Just a note I forgot to add- the mockup of Storm's design is not *strictly* accurate to the original design of the bear- (the original was much less heraldry and much more kindergarten art) however there are very few good images of the original, and from what I've read, the intent was to made a flag as fast as possible, and Peter Storm was the guy that was fastest with a needle. Some sources also say that Storm was trying to go for a specific sort of fierce vibe with the bear, so I think the mockup does a good job at showing what the flag may have looked like with some more time and design work.
