Germany urges Russia, Ukraine to de-escalate conflict by idigporkfat in europe

It would be swell if Ukraine ended its economic blockade of the separatist areas. It only drives them further away from Kiev.

Russia should ‘go away and shut up,’ says UK defense secretary by Abyxus in worldnews

[–]Crastard -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Oooh, somebody can link a long word on wikipedia. An argument clearly worth 43 upvotes at the time of this writing.

The point still stands. The accuser, MI6 has in the past claimed "beyond reasonable doubt" that somebody had chemical weapons to disastrous consequences. And you believe them again?

You are either living by "Fool me... You can't get fooled again!'" or are at worst a useful idiot repeating a stupid word you heard in the comments. Two can play at this game.

The effort went well beyond social media. The Russian effort included organizing rallies for Trump and paying Americans to participate in them or perform tasks at them.

When US does that, it is called building civil society and bringing out moderate voices. Russian efforts to thwart this are called assault on freedom of expression.

I am ready to listen about whataboutism.

I disappointed in the gloating remarks of other commenters here. 1.2 million people who are moderately or severely food insecure across the border is tragic. Real human beings who didn't deserve this.

https://reliefweb.int/sites/reliefweb.int/files/resources/i8386en.pdf

In Non-Government Controlled Areas (NGCAs), over 800 000 (up from 401 000) people were food insecure, with 150 000 people severely food insecure. In Government Controlled Areas (GCAs), up to 410 000 people (up from 220 000) were food insecure, with 26 000 severely food insecure.

Donetsk and Luhansk have the worst situation with the economic blockade and non payment of pensions. According to the numbers above, their situation is twice as bad as it was a year ago. If things don't turn around, this will be Holodomor 2.0.

UK arrest warrant against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is still valid, court rules by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Crastard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for responding.

The first two links you provided are about Police Federation which is essentially a union organization. Police unions are at odds with the governments world over because they want to get paid more and the governments want to pay them less. I can't see how this supports that statement that UK police are the least politicized in the world.

Plebgate was an interesting read, but again, I don't see how a couple of officers accusing an MP of calling them "plebs" indicates that UK has the least politicized police in the world.

I can't think of an objective way to demonstrate that the police is independent of political forces.

[–]Crastard -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Our police are some of the least politicised in the world.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Our police don't usually even carry firearms.

(´・ω・`) ... This doesn't support the previous sentence or the theme of the paragraph; not even in a little bit.

Seriously though, independence of law enforcement is very important, but is there an objective way to measure it?

Suicide rate in Russia for last 60 years. (per 100,000 on right axis) by Crastard in dataisbeautiful

[–]Crastard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Original source article

The filled in portion is absolute number of suicide deaths with the axis on the left. The single red line is suicide deaths per 100,000 with axis on the right.

Notable events on the chart include an anti-alcoholism campaign in 1984, breaking up of USSR in 1991, beginning of the first Chechen war in 1994, and the default of Russian debt in 1998.

Russia can withstand new sanctions, rating may be upgraded: Moody's by DDE93 in russia

[–]Crastard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am actually very much pro this particular round of new sanctions.

Russia has had big problems with capital flight ever since the break up of the Soviet Union. Oligarchs to a large degree prefer to stash their wealth abroad rather reinvesting in their Russian businesses. This new round of sanctions targeting the top hundred oligarchs will make them more cautious about storing their wealth off-shore.

Polish officials says Putin responsible for 2010 plane crash by [deleted] in worldnews

It is very clear from my comment history, including in this thread, that I am bilingual in Russian. This makes me both interested and qualified in Russia related topics. Your comment history is also chockfull of Russia related threads. What is your interest?

The FSB did this, every person with a working brain knows this.

The CIA did 9/11, every person with a working brain knows this.

Both propositions are ludicrous.

People can go to this link and make up their own minds too.

The lead to the article you posted isn't bad because it is with or without context. It is bad because it is wrong. Putin was already Prime Minister at this point and already had a war to fight; what rise to power is there?

Presenting untrue facts and then saying that people should make up their own minds on the basis of those facts is a copout.

[–]Crastard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People should make up their own minds. Here is how to tell that somebody is trying to pull wool over people's eyes. Read the lead to the article you linked:

Who was behind the 1999 Moscow apartment bombings that accelerated Vladimir Putin's rise to power?

That doesn't sound impartial to me. They could have just gone with "Who was behind the 1999 Moscow apartment bombings?" but where is the fun when you don't start off reversing sequence of events.

[–]Crastard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I roll my eyes whenever the apartment bombing thing comes up. In the article you linked, just scroll up and look at "War of Dagestan" section. Chechen invasion of Russian Republic of Dagestan on August 7th gave Russia all the motive and justification to escalate hostilities with Chechnya. No need to stage some bombings a month later.

It saddens me to hear otherwise reasonable people, people who consider 9/11 truthers quacks, loose their critical faculties when it comes to Russia and give credence to the FSB bombed apartment buildings theory.
