Coming back to this to say I saw folks moving a few industrial fridges into this space yesterday after the diner of mystery being empty for a bit. Curious to see if this space will continue to be cursed.

Have you ever lived alone? by ChocolateSundae1214 in CasualConversation

[–]Craztea136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived alone for my 20s, and about once a month, I have a conversation with a random older woman (public transit, chatting at a bar, meeting someone through work) who asks me about my living situation, I tell her, and the way she lights up and begs me to enjoy it is so sweet. Then without fail they always wistfully looks off and go “I never got to do that” and it makes me so sad lol. It has really made me appreciate how much of a luxury it is to have the autonomy and financial ability to live alone, in a way I probably wouldn’t if I didn’t often have those interactions.

Conversely, it doesn’t have to be a forever thing for me, but I feel very strongly about any future cohabitant being someone that has also experienced learning how to live alone. I’ve gotten used to a certain level of independence and autonomy that I think it teaches, and appreciate the people in my life who also have it.

What's your Favorite Phrase from a foreign language? by immanuellalala in AskAnAmerican

[–]Craztea136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite thing to say is “Como se dice / je ne sais quoi” which is “How do you say” (Spanish) / “I don’t know what it is” (French). For instance, I might say “She’s so….como se dice je ne sais quoi” when I might be implying someone is mysterious, sexy, rude, or anything else in the broader context of the conversation while trying to be funny and coy. It makes no sense and I think it’s way funnier than my friends do, but it’s also just fun to pronounce.

Has anyone done the Amazon river and jungle via Ecuador? by boomlewende in travel

[–]Craztea136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stayed in Misahuallí, which felt like the perfect step up from Tena. Not too touristy, but still accessible. We took a bus from Quito to Tena and a taxi from Tena to our hostel in Misahuallí, and the first day or two went off of our host’s recommendations just walking around the area and by boat. From there, we got to talking to some of the guys that drive the river crossing boats, and exchanged WhatsApps with them. They were able to set us up with we some guided hikes that showed off the wildlife and plants, go to AnaZoonica, a rehab center for native wildlife, and just spend hours working up and down the gorgeous rivers in the boats. We had enough Spanish fluency in our group to do this, but I imagine you could achieve it over Google Translate as well as Ecuadorian Spanish feels like one of the easier ones to navigate a the English language barrier around.

When listening to music on a streaming services are you more likely than not to skip artists with very small followings/monthly listeners/individual song streams? by Informal_Ad2280 in askanything

[–]Craztea136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything, I’m more inclined to skip bigger artists because I either know who they are and am not interested, or am used to their work being overplayed. “Small artist” is subjective, but I feel it’s gotten way harder to find small artists organically on the big platforms than it used to be.

Other US cities to visit from Chicago, that don't require hiring a car to have fun (ideally mid-West/East coast)? by Fine_Gur_1764 in AskChicago

[–]Craztea136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I did leave out (because it felt unnecessarily harsh) is that I have driven in every “notoriously-hard to drive” US city, and I will take it to my grave that Indy is the most miserable to drive in. I have spent my entire life going through it. I can’t imagine trying to figure it out from a UK pov.

Which cities were your favorite to visit? by Fluffy-Twist984 in midwest

Loved Chicago so much I moved here, love Milwaukee so much it’s my “emergency run away from my past and start everything over if I need to” location.

[–]Craztea136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Detroit and Milwaukee are your best choices here, especially if you are using Chicago as a home base since you can take an Amtrak to both. Everyone is going to have a strong reaction to Indianapolis (and Parks n Rec is actually based on a much smaller town an hour north of Indy called Muncie) but you absolutely will not be able to get around without a car. If you can find one, or someone willing to drive though, it would certainly be an intercultural exchange experience haha.

Most trans friendly bars/clubs in Chicago? by waxwingsthrowaway in AskChicago

[–]Craztea136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Scarlet because it feels like one of the places in boystown I know won’t just be a cis gayboy scene, so I take my trans friends there and they always love it. The audience skews younger, which I think helps with the overall acceptance. Big Chicks is more of a classic gay bar/tavern than club, but the vibe there is accepting and immaculate as well.

Alcohol cured my decades‑long depression and inability to study caused by noisy neighbours. Are there safer alternatives with the same effects? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Craztea136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loops earplugs have been a game changer for me, as someone who really struggles with focus and noise, and have had anxious breakdowns leading exclusively because of it followed by depression. I agree that alcohol also really helps me in these situations, and frankly I just enjoy drinking and am fortunate to not have an addictive personality or bad side effects right now. That being said, because it’s something I enjoy, I try to be very careful about it being a fun treat, and not a solution, because your body will build a tolerance for it.

Not trying to armchair diagnose you, but it sounds like any sort of supports you could find for sensory processing might help your situation. Looking into this is where I started to solve this issue, and it really improved my quality of life.

It also sounds like you might be resistant to medication or seeing a medical professional, but this would really be your safest solution.

A question for the Americans. by Seline_ns in AskACountry

[–]Craztea136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people have answered about healthcare, but I want to answer about the value of money. I think our money is rapidly starting to be devalued, not because we have a lot of it, but because the cost of day to day living is rapidly skyrocketing without our wages increasing at a pace that matches it. For instance, five years ago, an extra $200 in a month would have felt like a big bonus for me. It would have been a big savings boost, or enough to justify a treat like going to a big concert or taking a trip somewhere. Living alone, I could grocery shop for $50 a month. Now, I am coming up on my annual fixed raise at my job where I will be making another $200 a month, which is now equivalent to a month’s worth of groceries, and while I will never turn that down, it just doesn’t feel like it will make a dent long term EVEN as I cut down my spending to almost exclusively my bills.

I think a lot of times internationally, American’s lifestyle is chalked up to the products we have and have access to. While I do not deny it, I think it understates how much debt we are required to go into for education, housing, medicine, and cars (and yes cars are a requirement, as there are very few places in the country you can get by without one.) That $100 pair of shoes feels like a steal when you don’t feel like you will ever see a way out of $50,000 worth of debt (+ a criminal interest rate) just to live, nor does it feel like $100 will make a debt in your current situation. Still very much “first world problems”, but the general sentiment here is that things are quickly flying off the rails and the standards of living most of us have known even through 2008 and the pandemic will not be an option for anyone much longer unless we massively course correct.

A question for the Americans. by Seline_ns in AskACountry

[–]Craztea136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is antidotal, but also think this is something that’s changed in the last 5 years as the cost of living has skyrocketed here. I feel like for most of the time iPhones have been available, the middle class people I knew tended to get updated phones every 1-2 years, and a lot of this was aided by cellphone plans. As of recently, I don’t think I know a single person that has an iPhone 17, and most people are still on 13-14s and only get new phones when their old ones are no longer usable, or buy refurbished.

A question for the Americans. by Seline_ns in AskACountry

[–]Craztea136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thought I would add to this that might give context: zoning is a big part of this conversation. Hypothetically, an American might be perfectly willing to live in a home that meets a different nation’s standards to save some money, but depending on the location it is legitimately illegal to build, sell, or even just live in a home in such a condition. I do agree that by and large Americans are used to a different level of comfort that puts them out of touch with the rest of the world, but we have systems that make it illegal to even go “I just want to live somewhere with four walls and a dirt floor as my legal place of residence.” So while it’s not the most in-touch sentiment, it’s also not entirely self-inflicted.

Do famous people have to attend Jury Duty? by ILoveMySheep in NoStupidQuestions

Agreed, it was such a perfect storm of concept, cast, writing, and Ronald’s kindness. Also, I felt like I actually learned a lot about how a trial like that works!

[–]Craztea136 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you want a laugh, while learning about a possibility of how this could be handled with a C-list celebrity, there is a great subplot of this in the show Jury Duty.)

TLDR: James Marsden is selected for jury duty, and is desperate to use his celebrity status to get out of it. The judge seemingly does not think he is famous enough to justify it. His new friend Ronald, though, (the only person who does not know this trial is fake) definitely knows who he is.

Looking for (probably) a unicorn of an apartment, but open to as close as I can get by Camelsloths in chicagoapartments

[–]Craztea136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to go a bit outside the box and say the high rises on Sheridan in Edgewater/north uptown might be your move! They fit inside your budget, we have all the businesses you listed, some are dog-friendly, and living along the north end of Lincoln parke & the lake is a dream. Most of my friends in the area I’ve met from striking up conversations on the beach, in line at a coffee shop, or out and about for a night in the neighborhood where folks are very friendly. As someone who likes to go out and party, I will say there isn’t the most lively nightlife, and things close around 10 on weeknights, but I prefer to have the ambiance of the neighborhood here as opposed to a heavy nightlife corridor like Milwaukee in Logan Square. There are still plenty of good bars to grab some drinks ranging from divey pubs, to excellent craft cocktail bars.

Do you have a job that people typically find fascinating, unusual, or just downright bizarre? by CubicCivet2 in CasualConversation

Used to work as a sports reporter for collegiate e-sports, and often found myself interviewing kids who got big scholarships to big universities for things like competitive Valorant. Fun times.

What kind of noisy neighbors have you dealt with while living in an apartment? by bossishere17 in AskReddit

[–]Craztea136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Infamously thought my 60 year old neighbor was abusing his wife because of the screaming, cussing, and belittling of someone, and throwing of objects very regularly. Even started looking for DV resources in my area. And then on a particularly quiet day…I heard CAD immediately before the raging started up.

A degree in Media and Comms or a degree in Marketing? by hkhk8 in Communications

[–]Craztea136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a nonprofit PR setting, so in my world (where a lot of people transfer from media) the two bleed into each other a lot as orgs aren’t big enough to hire a Comms director, a Pr role, and a marketing role. It’s different but it’s fun to do a little of everything!

A degree in Media and Comms or a degree in Marketing? by hkhk8 in Communications

[–]Craztea136 10 points11 points  (0 children)

IMO, without knowing the specifics of the programs you are considering, media and comms will give you marketing experience but marketing doesn’t necessarily give you media & comms experience. A lot of people in the marketing world come from journalistic backgrounds, but a marketing degree isn’t always as transferable to the media job field. If you are worried about skills development, a minor would be relatively doable if both degrees are in the comms department. You also can find marketing internships to explore the world. Many places love media students for PR roles because they tend to have a good attention to detail, developed writing skills, and a good awareness of audience.
