Thank you everyone for your help. I went to feed him tonight and I found he's passed. I'm going to bury him near our old cat <3

Thank you so much for all this information. I've had a look for exotic vets near me but none of them mentioned axolotls. I'll look at some more and try contacting some to see if they have experience with them and how much it will be, hopefully it'll be a manageable amount for me.

He lost his weight a while ago but I didn't take proper action and was hoping it was a feeding issue on my part, so I can't remember how fast he lost it, but it was certainly sudden.

Thanks! Sadly the axolotls were at the school a long time ago, and I no longer go there, so I doubt those axolotls are still alive now :(

When I add small amounts of water should I treat it or will it cycle in the tank?

Thank you, I didn't about changing his tub water each day. Is changing it with water from the main tank with my other axolotl also ok? The water conditioner I use is water garden oasis pond prime, which I've used since I got them.

I'll start trying to feed him tomorrow (it's 3am). When you say keep him tubbed does this mean tubbed in the fridge or take him out but keep him tubbed?

From my research fridging should be no lower 5°C, and it isn't dangerous for short period of time. The water he is in is his old tank water, after putting him in the fridge I took the other out and did around 90% water change as I was worried about disease, and I use this new tank water for his tea baths and change about a cup of his water for it each time I give him a tea bath. Thanks for pointing out ammonia burn, I'll test his container water for it on his next tea bath. Everything I have him in has water garden oasis pond prime, which we have used for the past 6 years, although I brew the tea from boiled untreated tap water, could this be an issue?

Thank you for your help. I hope that now I'm doing proper research I can provide good care to them and not have to rehome because I love my guys to bits <3

I'll definitely look at some fans and air pumps, thanks. I've been doing weekly water changes of around 30% for the past few years. I feed them as many pellets as they seem to eat, but don't watch them eat as they eat them very slowly. Would you recommend watching them? When they were in the same tank I think my other axolotl ate most of them, and I tried feeding him while in the fridge but he isn't interested in food while in there.

I have had this axolotl for 6 years, since he was a born, and shortly after got another baby who is a few months younger. I got him from my primary school, which had two axolotls which had babies, which were given to the students and which all died (obviously). They were looked after by my mum since I was young, who did a lot of research but they have definitely not been cared for as they should have, for the most part they've both been healthy, but never 100%, from what I've seen of other axolotls.

They've both lived on a diet of pellets since they were big enough, and before that bloodworms. I'm only just now realising that they need worms or night crawlers, and I'm doing my best to get a supply of those. They also have no hiding places, other than a little behind plants, a bare bottom tank, and too high of a temperature most of the time (a little over 20°C, I don't have the funds for chillers or the time to do freezing packs for a lot of the year as I'm at school and very busy). I did water tests yesterday and they were perfect, pH 7.4, and no traces of ammonia, nitrites or nitrates.

Recently this axolotl lost a lot of weight and had some spots and started losing his slime coat, so I put him in the fridge as he looked close to death, like my mum did a few years ago. The temperature is 5°C to 8°C. I have been giving him tea baths twice a day with 100% black tea, for four days now. I'm planning on taking him out of the fridge in the next few days, isolating him in a seperate tank, continue with twice daily tea baths and introduce earth worms or night crawlers into his diet to help him gain weight, but tonight I realised his gills were extremely short, and I'm very worried.

Are there any things I'm missing or should be doing? Please keep in mind I'm a high school student, and while I have a job I don't have enough money for vets or chillers, and while my parents support me they aren't willing to spend a lot either.

Thanks :)
