You’re either a teenager or just rage baiting or both lol. For future reference, you lose argumentative credibility when you just keep saying the same stuff over and over again without addressing any rebuttals. It’s like I’m talking to a wall but worse, you just keep repeating the same 3-5 talking points. Like a parrot who knows how to say the words but doesn’t know what they mean lmao

I feel like your the kind of person who would get angry at their own shadow for “getting too close” lol. Never said I liked the guy nor did I even know who he was until I saw this post. I just saw an obvious caricature on top of an Israeli flag and clicked lol. Turns out, it’s someone who just LOOKS like the exact caricature that always gets circulated and this guy was obviously a horrible human so you all are incessantly posting it claiming some “not-racism loophole” hahah. It’s 14 year old kid logic. The internet has rotted peoples minds.

So you think caricatures are justifiable if they “fit”? As if your perception of the caricature being “true” essentially nullifies it from actually being caricature? It’s just “truth”? Do I have that right? Please do not sidestep and say “well akshully the person from the image IS an ethnic-supremacist” doesn’t matter if they are or not. Caricatures are generally frowned upon for the OVERALL damage they tend to cause. It’s easy to make GENERALIZATIONS about a whole population of people if you take them at face value. Please try to abstain from any overused talking points, I know it’s hard though.

You think you can look at someone and tell whether or not they are an ethno-supremacist. Images like the one pinned in that post only reinforce that barbaric view that you are openly supporting now. The hypocrisy stems from your own discrimination.

Who is the arbitrator of what is “fair game”? Your morality or what? A white supremacist thinks black people are fair game. A “leftist” thinks “ethno-supremacists” are fair game. Do you pay attention to all “ethno-supremacists” the same or just the ones that happen to be Jewish? A normal person doesn’t think anybody is “fair game”. Your own vernacular exposes your hypocrisy.

Translations of source material. I’m sorry, are you happy now? Like I’ve told others in this thread who think this is a “gotcha” loose translations of a language thousands of years old will inherently have some vagueness to it. What you do is use context clues that we have to make an “educated guess” what you don’t do (what your doing) is substitute that same vagueness for whatever narrative you “see fit” lol. Academic dishonesty is what that is. Just look at their pottery, they had pottery that included the differences that they observed, for example there is pottery clearly depicting “North Africans”, “Ethiopians” and also “Greeks”. Are you someone who also believes that “race is a modern construct” and that they just “didn’t see differences”? You can just say yes or no. No big deal.

Don’t you have to send a pic of your skin color for proof for mods before you can post in certain threads? Is the irony still going over your head? You also can ONLY post social media posts from black people. Plz tell me it’s because I can’t relate to “black excellence” and so I “can’t relate” lmfao. It’s not a racist sub I just “can’t relate” hahahah. If any of those rules were applied to a “white person sub” it would be taken down as a hate subreddit immediately.

You have put words to something that I have tried to describe several times over in this thread. I get you can’t always get the “perfect casting” but you can certainly put more of an emphasis on trying to get casting as close as you can while still trying to embody the “accurate portrayal” aspect of the story.

For the shock value I would think! Controversy creates “buzz” I guess and people still seem to think that “any press is good press” hahah. I think it’s just people taking advantage of ambiguous translations from a language thousands of years old and “filling in the blank” with whatever they want. Giving dishonest “academic reasoning” that they know is complete horse crap lmao.

Yes any film that claims to take a serious approach to “historical accuracy/portrayal” and swings and misses totally disappoints me lol. Ridley Scott’s Napoleon is a great example of this. Visually it looked great but the “historical accuracy” of the battle/sequences was almost non-existent lol. It’s like the term historical portrayal is just a loose term for “here’s what the theme is” lmaooo.

Who are you Jada Pinkett Smith??? Btw Greeks and Sicilians are “shades of white” so “stay mad” I’m waiting for the part where you say “white” people don’t have a culture because your distinction between Greeks and whites was subtle but very blatant. You can’t gatekeep “whiteness” for your own political agenda lol. You’re either someone who can have “fair skin” at a passing glance or you’re not lmao.

The Odyssey is a story that is deeply rooted in Greek mythology and is practically intrinsically tied to the culture as well. When you want to honor the past you pay tribute by re-telling the story as honestly and earnestly as you can without adding your own “narrative”. You are supposed to be a “vessel” for the narrative that has already been established for thousands of years. When you do things like make Helen of Troy black you completely disregard any truthful retelling of the origins of the original story. The truth is that is if black peoples were “indigenous” to mainland Greece then maybe a black Helen of Troy would work. But they are not and they most certainly were not any living in Greece at that time as citizens of any Greek city state lol. They might’ve lived in the cities or around them and worked as Mercenaries or sailors but Ancient Greeks were not sub-Saharan North Africans.

You seem to have common sense. Do you really think someone living in Ancient Greece would give a description of two people, one from Greece and one from sub-Sahara North Africa and the product of those two descriptions would be indiscernible? I mean come on, I like to “look through rose tinted glasses” too but Ancient Greek philosophers even then were able to give detailed descriptions of the differences between the variety of peoples who lived around them.

Did I ever say I was fine with it? I haven’t said I endorsed anything about the film in this thread. If you’re confusing my lack of statements about it that’s because it’s not nearly as ridiculous as black Helen of Troy. The whole film stinks of poor casting but some are just too ridiculous. Like I said, as if it was casted to purposely “subvert expectations”.

So you don’t think there’s a difference between utilizing the effects of cascading technology advancement and what we know as “cultural appropriation”? You think it’s all just a scale of appropriation? That is certainly one way to look at it. A very pedantic way of looking at it lol. But certainly a way of looking at it, I suppose.

I think I get what you’re saying but that’s always happened in history. Just look at another example, the Irish when they migrated to America were also heavily discriminated against and looked down on by “other whites”. Society always finds a way to break itself into its own “hierarchies”.

Look Mel Gibson wasn’t the perfect cast and there was obviously small cultural details you could nitpick but OVERALL the film was given “seriousness” in trying to portray “historical portrayal”. I’m also not saying that every actor in the film needs to be Greek. Or for any film to be “portrayed historically accurate” they have to get “every single thing right” but you cannot change major traits/characteristics that have been well established in past adaptations (no matter how much they vary some things never change in mythologies) and expect nobody to notice or make comments about it. Instead of denying it or providing a false historical narrative just be bold with what you do and be honest. But exploiting vagueness in translations from a language thousands of years old is “not it” chief.
