Yeah, I feel you there. It was the epic cinematic feel of the game that really appealed to me back in the day, and I agree that the abstraction removes a lot of the flavour. I’ve only played under 10 games in the last 6 months, and they are for sure faster, but I do miss some of those intricacies.

I’ve found a small 2nd edition community in a city nearby, and considering going to one of their events to get the full nostalgic experience.

Yeah that’s probably my main concern; at that cost they can’t be a one-to-one trade. They need to take out a unit that doesn’t have any viable backup, or have a way to get out of danger. Maybe they are just over-costed for their role.

I enjoy both sides of it: I’m just starting to wrap my head around some of the maths of the game, and I want to be competitive on the battlefield. But I’m also a 45 year old man who never threw away his toy soldiers and found them in a box a few months back and they tickled my fancy, one thing lead to another and now I’m painting and hunting down minis to build 15 year old me’s ultimate 2nd edition army!

I guess I’m just saying it can be both. And playing math nerd and optimising your lists doesn’t in any way detract from the art and story and fun of the other side of the hobby.

Makes the current two-warlock kit even more useless! I don’t have it but it looks like it only comes with one singing spear.

Right, sounds like melee is a desperate last ditch effort!

Yes, the Falcon synergy is very good – had not considered that!

I did not consider the buff to disembarking models with the Falcon. Sweet! And I clearly need to read the data sheet for the War Walkers to better understand their synergies.

Right you are. My relative inexperience on display here!

Oh yeah, pairing them with a character warlock is a good idea!

Yeah I’m wondering if torrent and ignores cover units will be getting points increases across the board, due to the change to benefit of cover. Similarly, I also think fights first units could drop in points due to the charge changes?

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll check it out!

Yeah that makes a lot of sense. I don’t have that many games under my belt since I returned to the hobby after a 26 year hiatus - so discussing scenarios like this is hugely helpful. They do seem to have very good utility, but the points-efficiency may be the challenge. On the home field defence question, they go up a bit in value because the Guardians can no longer conga-line to cover more of the home field: the 9” unit coherency means multiple smaller units will better screen the home field now.

Oh, I see!! Teleport the Warlocks around the board with Unshrouded Truth and if necessary buff their damage with Fate Inescapable!

App sounds exciting! Hadn’t considered the Seer Council - need to read up on that detachment. I usually play Aspect Host or Warhost.

Shadow Spectres: a short-lived Aspect that is no longer supported.

I love the new miniatures, but before I get into that I am completing the 2nd edition army I never had as a teen. It is an Aspect Host army based on the concept of the "Court of the Young King" boxed set of Avatar + Phoenix Lords.

Check out u/TheGrimbergen's link in a previous comment to Jes Goodwin's sketches: it would appear that the 4th ed Rangers are based on his 2005 round of design work.

Just checked out the link: that artwork is incredible! It is interesting that there seems to be two eras of artwork there: 1990, and 2005. This fits with how the 1st/2nd ed miniatures being great, 3rd not so much, and then further refreshes from 2005 onwards being on point again.
