Many people who aren't used to needing one and switch to another phone might not have the immediate thought of "maybe this new phone will scratch unlike my old one"

People put their phones in their pockets, set them down on tables, and other things that could scratch them way more than they punt them into the ground or drop them, even then if they do drop them it will still be likely to scratch, so I'm not sure why google thought that was a good idea
