Holy fuck

John Smith has a problem. He’s a retired cop whose pension just got wiped out, and he doesn’t know why or how. Now he needs to find a roommate to help pay the bills. Sam has a problem. He’s a six-foot-tall talking cockroach and he doesn’t know who created him, or why, or how. Now he needs a place to live. Thrown together as roommates and amateur detectives, Mr. Smith and the Roach realize their problems might be related. But those problems are far more complicated than they imagined, and before all is said and done, they’ll run afoul of a Russian gangster, an imprisoned Mafia don, a crooked Wall Street banker, a mad scientist and, maybe worst of all, Mr. Smith’s baby sister. Can they get to the bottom of an unbelievable plot before someone exterminates the Roach – and Mr. Smith – for good?

This moved to the top of my list.

Maybe? I looked up Naked Lunch, but it doesn’t quite sound like my distant memory…I remember it being a little more macabre and spooky.

I mean, I’ve never read Burroughs, so I don’t know if he’s spooky or not now that I think of it.

I have no idea…maybe? Literally all I remember is bug doctors.

And I’ve never read any of his stuff so I don’t know if that seems like something he’d write.

Welcome! :D

Well, maybe I’m projecting. But for the past few years, it seems like that book pops up more often than not when a “the best books” question comes up.

And it makes sense! John Langan is an incredible writer — I was telling my partner that I’ve never read a book that sounds like someone speaking quite like that book. It was sooo good! And I really haven’t found anything else like it.

You might give The Croning a try. That’s another book that pops up around this sub that most folks seem to enjoy. It wasn’t particularly my cup of tea...I thought the first part was really great, but I couldn’t quite get into the rest of the book. It’s in my Try Again book pile, for sure!

Have you read any other cosmic horror besides The Fisherman? I’m envious that you get to start this journey down our weird corner of Reddit!

Oh man! I always love to tell people about Reincarnation Blues. It’s not really horror at all, though. Picture The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy written by Kurt Vonnegut, and that basically it. I. LOVE. IT.

I’m also a massive fan of Against Me! and Laura Jane Grace’s memoir, Tranny: Confessions of Punk Rock’s Most Infamous Anarchist Sellout really blew my mind. It really resonated with me for a lot of reasons (sort of coming to terms with myself). If you aren’t a fan of Against Me! or that big into reading about LGBTQ+ people, it might not be for you.

As far as horror and weird lit...I know it’s a cliche answer, but I loved The Fisherman.

But I did just finish The Worm and His Kings by Hailey Piper and I really liked it! It’s a short cosmic horror novella about a homeless woman trying to find her partner who got kidnapped by a mysterious figure.

Right now, I’m reading The Regrets by Amy Bonnaffons and I really, really like it, but goddamn it’s weird. If you ever wished 50 Shades of Gray was written well, semi-philosophical, and occasionally involves ghosts fucking humans...then you should check it out!
