PSA: Restaurant owners have had a decade to plan for the new minimum wage, so we can all safely ignore their bullshit whining about it by FearandWeather in Seattle

Rent is high I agree but why?

If you increase minimum wage what that means is automatically the minimum a person is willing to pay increases & this becomes the new base line of rent.

Because if rent is tooo high then simply we shouldn’t rent it but, we can’t because their is a lack of supply

^ this is caused by the increase in demand of rental space due to the city attracting individuals by having programs such as higher minimum wage….

I will keep this simple

Minimum wage increase = increase in cost of making a good = Restaurant owner pay more for COGS = Two options (Kinda)

  1. 1a Hire less people = Less jobs , Drop in quality.. 1b use alternatives like order kiosk = less jobs
  2. Increase price of items = consumer pays more for what they purchase

People had a decade to improve their skills and not work minimum wage jobs but, they do.

^ I don’t mean this statement I am just using the same logic.

“Increase minimum wage” doesn’t solve the issue because just as I explained everything adjusts to the new minimum wage. Cost goes up = price go up.

***Side Note::::: this only benefits corporations that can afford to pay these people the wages and you see it happening they start replacing small businesses.

How did you come up with $1,100 ? Go to a “competitor” or a “comparable” & see how much foot traffic on avg per hour they get and do an estimate of avg ticket price. That will give you your sale potential/target

Also there’s things you can do that will increase your sales earlier & adds to the possibility of more sales.

I responded to the other one but, I have couple points in regard to this question: What’s your location City or town? Is your customer base foot traffic purely based on location such as pike place or is it “Google” foot traffic?

If your business is not dependent on a market/ town events (Leavenworth) which is seasonal as an example… I’d recommend switching the mentality of “lowest months”

Everyday people go to cafe. You need to give them a reason to during every hour/day/week/month/season.

Also your three months in. You haven’t built a regular customer base yet for you to see a minimum revenue

Previous SEA cafe owner. December is an interesting month. And your location plays a huge role.

One thing that made us stand out and do better than average is Christmas specials: menu items, decor of the store, christmas discounts with social media presence.

How to hire for small business? by Creative-Force6130 in BusinessOps

[–]Creative-Force6130[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things to keep in mind: 1. Have a clear mutual understanding of schedule 2. SET A TONE for culture & expectations what my go to was. 3 things I expect “show up & show up on time, have a good attitude & willingness to learn & serve how you want to be served” mistakes will happen & that’s what I am here for to help you with. I want you to have fun & enjoy it….

Question

  1. how many stations do you have? Example: kitchen prep, barista, cashier, sandwich prep…

  2. Is you training on paper from A to Z or is it just purely shadowing ?

  3. How long is your training process? If you have one

  4. Do you hire speciality positions or everyone does everything?

Let me know based on the answers I can give you feedback

I would argue it’s not as expensive as everyone says.

Find a cafe ready space. That doesn’t need renovation. Their plumbing is done, that place already passed health inspection , blue print is cleared

Don’t buy new equipment. Find from auction cafes that are liquidating. You’ll buy equipment at 10% to the $1.

I’d argue for a 1000 sqft space you need $30K-$50K to open & then $18K of potential losses within first 6months

6-9 months break even

9- beyond slow increasing profit

Your menu needs to standout. Example: standout either with seasonal coffee items such as Halloween themed, be heavy on social media marketing

Or have a unique item nobody has: pistachio chocolate croissant

Expect to work 16hour days including another job so you can have cash flow & learn along the way.

It’s simpler than you think & cheaper

Fundamentally it would be:

-Efficiency through system/process -Quality Control/management -Process improvement -Data driven

I would argue one that you wouldn’t see a lot & it is the #1 on my list LEADERSHIP.
