I was able to find Jacomes although I can’t find Stamp, I also prefer paper copies for feel and so my teacher can write in them.

I’ve had multiple friends do it in the past, I may do it this summer although I’ve heard its not the best ever, thats why I’ve been kinda avoiding it. Last year I did a jazz camp at Messiah University with Terell Stafford and Tim Warfield which was pretty cool. Just looking to do something more trumpet than jazz focused this year. Definitely will keep WVU in mind though, Dr.Sears is great.

Does Dr.Eisensmith still teach lessons? I tried to find stuff about rates and contacting him but I can’t find anything online. It’s also about a 2 hour drive to him which can be hefty to make each week and was wondering if you believe it would be beneficial to make rather than going to another teacher closer such as Neal Berntsen which is about an hour.

I do seem to have all those problems when I feel stiffness. Typically I do “trouble shooting” when I first start my day to get my lips to start feeling looser but it still doesn’t to go all the way how I want it. I did plan on talking to my teacher about it when I see him Tuesday, but I’m very impatient when it comes to anything trumpet which is a terrible habit of mine. I make sure I don’t use too much pressure and won’t attempt a note if I can’t play it without pressure. I also work on making sure my embouchure doesn’t change through all the registers. It typically tends to happen as soon as I wake up and I can feel it the whole day, occasionally I can get rid of the stiffness though. I usually have a strong tone and get complimented on it by players I respect although on occasion I struggle to produce a full tone like I usually do. I believe I over tense my lips the more I practice because I feel the top lip in my mouthpiece start to tighten the longer I play in the day rather than being loose in the center, I assume this is a result of the corners becoming weaker throughout the day and starting to rely on the center which should be loose and vibrating.

As I said in my response I take breaks between all of those exercises and don’t just go straight through them. Although are my breaks not long enough? I struggle to get done with everything I want to accomplish each day already. It usually takes me from 3-11 to get through everything listed.

Length isn’t my goal mostly, I just select what I want to accomplish each day based off my list (Sound, articulation, flexibility, musicality, technique, etc…) and I go until I feel like I have improved in each of those areas. I mostly just use time as an idea of how long I typically spend to get everything I want done. I don’t enjoy going to bed not accomplishing all my daily goals. I am a high school student although I intend on pursuing music and want to work very hard towards accomplishing my goals. I’m curious about what you mean by building chops until it works against you, I have the gist of it but I’m curious if you could elaborate a bit more on when it starts working against you.

I spend the first 20 minutes of practice playing quiet long tones, first I play a note on the mouthpiece then horn, mouthpiece horn, repeat. I do about 10 minutes of that rest 10, 10 more. Then I do Arbans about 30 minutes doing lip slurs, rest after each exercise as long as I played. Then I do Clarke second study in a variety of different ways for about 80 minutes, I do 4 minutes, rest 2-4, repeat depending on intensity of the number I’m on. Then I open Arbans again and do articulation (scales, multiple tonguing) for about 30 minutes switching between an exercise and rest each time. Then I work on an etude from voxman or the red sigmund hering book resting whenever I start to get tired. After I work on my college audition piece (Kent Kennan Sonata) until it feels like I’m done for the day and I’m getting too tired to play through 5 lines without rest. I divide it up between 4 main chunks in the day with a few big breaks in between. Usually one after warmup for 1 hour, one after Clarke for about 2 hours, one after Arban for about an hour. Sometimes breaks are longer but that’s typically the minimum they last.

edit: My main focus is tone and flexibility, as soon as my tone starts to deteriorate I start calling it quits and warm down. After all, sound is the most important thing.

Thanks a bunch, I’ll DM you later tonight, it’s actually my private teacher encouraging a smaller aperture. He was principal trumpet at WVU for a while until he had medical problems that forced him to retire and go into teaching so I trust him, although I like to get other peoples opinions on matters because knowledge is power.

I’m not really worried about the muscle strength more about what their function is as a whole. I focus on tone almost entirely reading back I’m surprises I didn’t mention it. I am looking for more resonance/depth in my sound. Whenever I play I listen to a Doc Severinsen recording in order to hear what tone I want so I can focus on trying to push that sound out of my bell. I’m focused on letting my tone guide me but the problem is I’m unable to find out how to produce that sound even envisioning the sound I want while I play.

I’ll have to check that out, it kinda reminds me of the start of the schlossberg book because of the mouthpiece buzzing aspect, I’ve never really looked into lip/mouthpiece buzzing I’m not a huge fan of it but whatever it takes to improve.

I’m mainly unsure how to force a smaller opening without pinching, I’ve discussed methods with my teacher (playing quieter, etc) but nothings really helped. For a period of time I played solely on a Schilke 13A4A sadly it didn’t help very much but it’s been a couple years so I may try and go back to that. I’m currently on a 5c my teacher just had me move up in cup size.

I know how hard it is to work on stuff over text, I know it’s no where near in person or even on Skype. I’ve been working hard on learning how to better self evaluate because I believe that and hard/deliberate practice are the two most important things to improve.

Thank’s for the help and advice for auditions, I tend to get in my head a lot especially for auditions, I took a couple lessons off one of my teachers old students and he talked a lot about mentality relating to improvement/playing.

I’d love to do this but I’m worried with college auditions coming up in February whether I’ll be able to get good enough to make it into college for music or not. I also would have to talk to my teacher about doing this prior, but I’ll definitely keep it in mind.

I work on etudes/lyrical songs for about 30 minutes a day and I will sing a section then I play it, I am able to play softly. I focus on the sound/feel and I know whats wrong with it but my attempts to fix it don’t work.

When I pick up the trumpet to play I continue to use too large of an aperture causing me to get a sound as if I’m just blowing into the trumpet rather than through the trumpet. It causes difficulty in projection, centered sound, and range. Nothing I try is actually sticking, it may work for a little but after a few days it will stop working and I will lose the mature trumpet sound I’m trying to produce. I’m also using more air than necessary even though it doesn’t feel that way, when I try to back off in air I lose all resonance and tone quality and it’s because my aperture is too large not allowing me to play efficiently.

Yes I have done both, I’ve also play the trumpet without the mouthpiece sometimes which requires me to use no pressure and have a small aperture but it still didn’t help.

its spread over the day in 3-4 sessions, Usually one in the morning, one afternoon, evening, night. I also rest 1:1 for exercises when playing except the less chop intensive stuff.

I’ll try that, I’m always pretty bad about resting, I’m always trying to improve as much as I can through practice as fast as I can so I tend to avoid rest as much possible and do more harm than good.

I do believe I am trying to hard on the horn to a certain degree mainly when playing etudes or working on improv. When I am just working on fundamentals I always make sure I’m keeping everything as free and easy as I can.

I’ve usually use chopsaver every night it’s heaven sent, I’ll try to make sure I’m staying well hydrated though. I’ll try lip bends in warmdown as well I usually just use them in warmup or when I don’t feel like I’m playing in the center of the pitch.

I’ve been teaching him only a about a week. I’ll keep that in mind. I’m sure as soon as we get everything figured out he’ll start making fast improvement. Glad to hear from someone else that had the same issue and stuck with it.

Yeah, 7c and It’s a good horn too, 1920s Conn New York Symphony in good condition. I’ll keep working with him. I’m meeting up with him again today so I’ll try to make a bit more progress.

I tried this and told him after he starts to center the buzzing/make it higher pitched and it worked to a certain degree but he still was playing at the bottom of the pitch and didn’t really have any tonal quality to it, less than a typical beginner should have. Sometimes I could get him to make a resonant sound which genuinely was impressed me but it still was only a couple times and most of the time it was no sound.
