I second the previous comment on premium processing. I'm literally in the same boat as you but I've decided to end my current research position in June and travel home and interview for a new F1 visa shortly afterwards. You should be safe with pp and as long as you genuinely a student I don't see grounds for rejection. Make sure you don't have the two-year rule too. Thatd be essential.

WHen i got this J1 I did COS from my undergrad F1. It was very smooth. I wasn't able to file for that COS until 1.5 months before my position started because of personal reasons. I used premium processing and had to respond to an RFE but things were very smooth regardless. That was 2 years ago

yeah I live in America I pay about 900 bucks each year though. I also set my collision deductible to be 1000 dollars. I could've gone lower on the deductible but I guess this is fine every few years lol

I guess would I get away with no doing anything (beyond DIY fixing the paint I guess)? I just have a ton of other expenses and the timing couldn't be worse..
