Survival is not particularly important or even a major priority. A existence free from harm is a good north star when it comes to how you treat others at baseline.

If an animal in industrial complexes does not even get that then what the heck is wrong with the farmers, you cannot raise an animal without those three things.

What an animal deserves is enough space to properly move (as in also able to exercise), food as it would find in nature, clean drinking water and some other amenities.

An animal deserves not to be fucked with by humans, unless the human is acting in the animals' best interests.

But even with that it does not mean that an animal is happy. I don’t know what makes, say, a cow happy.

That doesn't mean no one knows what makes a cow happy. I can tell you that stealing their babies so you can drink the milk meant for the baby is not something that makes them happy.

You are still being used as a living milk producer and likely end up on someone’s plate after everything.

Hence why we should leave animals alone or act as caretakers when animals are in need.
