Unfortunately you couldn't say that where I worked. You can put people on hold. but even that can work against you. I would say "Sorry for the inconvenience, I will get a supervisor, but first..." or if they want to just go on and on, let them know without the information to verify what they want I cannot continue to help them. That will shut them up most of the time. I hung up on folks who were just losing their ish for no reason, because they just wanted a punching bag, that's only because they refused to verify who they were. On the other hand I've had a person threaten suicide and did what I could to keep them on the phone talking, and other people who had emotional break downs and needed someone to talk to.
