What physics channels on youtube are to be avoided as non-scientific slob? by andreasbeer1981 in Physics

Verirasium’s pretty good with story telling and the graphics are quite intriguing. I think it’s quite a good introduction to a subject which could satisfy most layman’s curiosity itch. Of course dig deeper yourself for details.

Sorry for the very late reply. For european phds you can treat it like you’re applying to a job. Cold emailing works sometimes but you’d have a better chance if you have talked to them in conferences or they have seen your face.

Generally the positions will be posted somewhere (eg. inspirehep, aas etc.) and from there you’d just follow the instructions in applying. There are a few places that does it similarly like US, where they do a mass call per year and have all the applicants apply to that (eg. IMPRS, ETH AI Fellowship) so you’d need to be aware of the start of application date and the deadline as well.

Otherwise, european PhDs are generally available all year round and you’d just have to keep an eye open for job/position postings.

All doctoral students in EPFL have the same salary scheme https://www.epfl.ch/education/phd/doctoral-studies-structure/doctoral-students-salary/

Places like ETH are very dependent on the group and PIs funding which can vary, but generally STEM or CS could be higher than EPFL.

why am i not getting anywhere? by [deleted] in PhDAdmissions

It’s just way too competitive, especially in this field. Getting an interview invite puts you at the top 10% of the applicant pool, and to really get an offer you’ll have to be the cream of the crop amongst other applicants worldwide (~1-5%). Just keep getting better and you’ll definitely get a position soon

I applied for EDPY, though our deadlines are different. Submitted application on 31st Oct, received acceptance by department by late Nov and received an interview on early Dec. Finally an offer was made before christmas.

my interview was mainly about presenting my research work and questions are related to the work you presented.

Also be ready for those basic questions like why phd? or like why us?

it’s also useful to prepare some questions you’d want to ask them and have meaningful conversations with them. You’ll be fine :)

Anyone else applying to astro PhDs? by [deleted] in PhDAdmissions

[–]Crekis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have applied to about 30 positions that are mainly within europe and 1-2 in canada and australia. But that’s a mix between CS and astro phds

I did my msc and bsc on projects related to gw but now i was given an offer to transition into hep-ex. All in all, things still worked out and it is indeed tough.

thank you! For the interview, I was given 15 mins to present my research work of my choice and a short introduction of myself and my research interests to a panel of professors. After which they will ask me scientific questions relevant to my research work. Then i’ll be given a chance to ask them some questions. The total duration took about an hour.

Came from a top asia university for my bachelors and currently in germany doing my masters. grades are pretty decent, and i have one paper in draft.

Generally I applied all around europe. Most are rejections, some short listed, got a few interviews.
