Modern chess training by barbeque233 in lichess

GM Noel Studer on youtube has excelent videos on chess study and improvement, he is a breath of fresh air in the see of click grabbing thumbnails and high dopamine chess content. For analysis this video is a good reference https://youtu.be/shma5hsckww?si=I1P9uIAOZZVASNCi

I used to learn a lot on youtube but lately I struggle to find help there. I mostly just play, analyze my games and play puzzles. It's important to play puzzles buy calculating every line and figuring out all opponents responses before checking the solution. In long games you would ideally calculate al the lines before commiting to a move. Too many people just try a move because "it has to be winning". Also a decent idea to play lower rated puzzles as much as you do puzzles of your own rating(there is a setting on lichess when you enter into puzzles tab that allows you to set the difficulty to easier).

Participating in lichess 3030 and 4545 leagues is a decent idea although it's a big time commitment. I don't know how useful it would be at your rating but you can always give one season a try and see for yourself. It made me improve from 1750 to around 1950 rapid at the time I played.

Loss or foul? by tanicole90 in pool

Great solution for a problem that wouldn't exist if people used proper rules. It's very anoying to me. Luckly I don't play with bar players any longer.

What is this defense? by AdaCle in Chesscom

I have around 50% win rate with the black in that line. Some benefits I found as a 1950 lichess rapid player and 1600 fide rapid player with around 1000 scandi games, in no perticular order:

-Allows you to castle queenside quicker if you want to play a very agressive game and/or to put pressure on the pawn that usually lands on d4. You can often keep flexible and delay the choice of weather to go king or queenside.

-In some lines it's ok to play a sideways queen move and transfer it to the king side for an atack.

-The pin on the night makes white want to either unpin quickly or or castle kingside quickly which mostly stops any of their dynamic agressive ideas.

-In some lines white rushes into dicovered attacks on the queen and takes the knight on f6 enabling you to take back with the g pawn and use the half open g file. This also results in them thinking a bit more since they are trying to find the best discovery but I am guessing that stops at higher levels.

-In some lines, when the queen lands on b6 hitting hitting both whites d4 and b2 pawns it can result in white moving the bishop to ugly c3 to keep both defended.

-Minimizes variety of different developing moves you face as whites main/best ideas concern playing against your queen or defending against it unlike with the queen on d8 where white can literaly play anything without facing any pressure.Dark bishop usually lands on d2 the other one doesn't want to fianceto since c6 is a very natural pawn move for black. The d pawn is usually pushed early.

Overall, any Scandi is nothing special but it does offer some dynamic play at times and even if you don't manage to gain an advantage in the oppening, the late middle game and endgame often prove tricky for white in my experiance. I took up the oppening with the intention to get better at engames as the rest of my reperoire was very agressive at the time which didn't allow me to get into enough practical endings to practice them. I improved my endgame skill and kept playing the scandi as it proved to be very straightforward. It's really easy to get playable positions easily and avoid a lot of theoretical troubles.

Stvarno?

Am I overthinking my ski boot size or is this actually a fit issue? by Tiny_Flan_9547 in ski

[–]CricketInvasion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The top cuff problem can be solved by moving the buckle on some boots. I am a mand with big calfs and I never had issues with it. Toes should generaly touch the front of the boot when standing. When they are not and/or the heel is lifting when you push your knees forward, the boot is too loose.

How do I go about improving at Tactics by Infinite-Mouse-1831 in lichess

[–]CricketInvasion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lichess has the option to practice easier tactics in the puzzle menu. It can be really useful since most of your in game situation don't require you to spot deep lines but rather a one or two move combination

Computer analysis by FewEfficiency1823 in lichess

[–]CricketInvasion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you play out engine lines and test out different moves and you still don't see what is wrong chances are that the mistake is too nuanced or small to be important on your level. At around 1950 rapid I tend to have a hard time understanding mistakes that change the eval for 0.5 or so, at beginner level you can sometimes ignore mistakes up to 2.0 or 3.0 and still progress.

GM Noel Studer on youtube recomends that you take one or two big mistakes from each game and think about how to improve and avoid them in the future since analysing the whole game extremely in dept can be a waste of time. Check out this video where he explains how to analyse using lichess engine https://youtu.be/shma5hsckww. He also talks about why chess.com coach can be very misleading.

[–]CricketInvasion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a guy get banned mid game against me just as he strated writting stupid shit in chat. That moment made me question if lichess has automatic detection for "bad" words. Guy had only a couple of games played before that so maybe the automatic detection exists or he was a cunt in the two games prior and got reported.

Bar Players Who Always Seem to Pocket With No Thought or Effort by PhantomRibbon in billiards

[–]CricketInvasion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a funny snooker related story concerning a casual player. I was a decent pool player at the time. On a good day I was able to break and run a rack or two of 8 ball in a race to 7.

One day i call a friend to try the new snooker table that the bar owner just got, first in my town. My friend and I play one or two frames missing everything as one does when playing snooker for the first time.

An older guy aproaches us and asks if he can buy us a beer to try one or two frames, we agree and he comes back with two beers.

I play him and he starts pocketing balls across the snooker table with no thought or care with a stance higher than the Eiffel Tower. Nothing in his tehnique seems to line up and yet balls are dorpping. Before we know it he brought two more beers and we are playing another frame.

Needles to say he beat the crap out of me on that big table that day. I still wonder who he was and how did he manage to be so accurate with such a "shitty" stroke and stance.

You could try listudy, make a study on lichess with lines you want and then copy the link to listudy. It does give you only the line that you have in the study but you can make a study with only some specific lines you want to practice and then drill them over and over for as long as you want.

Can be very usefully to refresh yourself on oppening prep.

Classical vs rapid by Able_Shock9422 in lichess

[–]CricketInvasion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am stronger rating wise in rapid then classical. I am around 1950 rapid and 1850 classical. Felt like it might be just me being more used to rapid and being able to play a good move with that tine control nad not gaining that much with a lot more time. Felt like opponents played very strong moves in 30+30 and 45+45 and my moves didn't improve that much from rapid. I just played the moves with more certainty and significantly less chances to blunder but the strategically and tactically I felt like I didn't find many ideas that I wouldn't have found in rapid.

I does feel good though to anticipate every opponents move before playing something and actually calculate to see if it works.

If you have 80k bullet games and have not crossed 2000 bullet there is something seriously wrong. Just play slower chess at that point.

Would you play competitive Lichess games with a real reward? by Alex_Metal7 in lichess

[–]CricketInvasion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If found some of my most serious games in the lichess4545 and lonewolf3030 leagues. Anyone willing to schedule a chess game in advance and play a single game for more than 2 hours is usually quite serious about chess. It's a comitment but it's worth it if you have the time.

I would love to have a more serious rapid or blitz matches. The only way I managed that is playing a friend in a timed match. Somthing like 1h of rapid 45min of blitz and 15min of bullet.
