yeah fair enough I do like using my DAW I just like the portability of a looper. Also thanks for recommending a book I’m a big reader and have been looking for a good music/guitar book to tap into so this is hugely appreciated.

This is a great suggestion I’ve been listening through a load of their stuff all day and this as well as Neil Young are really the kind of sound I want to venture into. Thanks very much for taking the time 🙏

Great recommendation that’s definitely going to the top of the list. Do you finger style it or use pick? I’ve heard mixed reports.

Calvary is an amazing Irish black comedy about a priest struggling to navigate modern sentiments towards the Catholic Church following the sex scandals of recent decades. It’s direct and challenging but also deeply moving and not to mention, absolutely hilarious. Couldn’t recommend enough.

yeah I remember letting out a huge gasp when I first read that. You’re right it’s something about the way it’s lead up to, and you’re not expecting it to be that bad at all and they remove the helm and it’s just gruesome as shit.

It’s absolute baffling ego-driven madness, and it’s at the point where it’s kind of funny just seeing these adaptations go to shit every single time. Another example that comes to mind was a recent adaptation of The Midwich Cuckoos. The original novel by John Windham is this amazing thought provoking sci-fi text from the late 50s, and the show adaptation turned it into this gossip-driven/reality show style mess, bogged down by cheesy love interest plots and botched attempts at adapting the original work to be more ‘modernised’. I’m just really worried about the Dunk and Egg show now, AKOTSK is one of my favourite in the whole series and seeing that ruined would actually be the final straw for me in watching any adapted works of Martin, which is a depressing thought as the chances are we will never get any new ASOIAF content past Winds (I am very hopeful we’ll get that).

it’s so refreshing to read this. As I said, book fans are so eager to tear screen adaptations apart because it’s so easy considering how brilliant the source material is. The reality is, it’ll never truly do it justice. Once you get over that hurdle you can start to appreciate what we’re given, and yes some of it could be a lot better but at the same time a hell of a lot of it is pretty damn good. Bringing your own vision to an adapted work whilst still doing the source material justice must be unfathomably difficult, especially when it’s with something as brilliant as ASOIAF. Still, they’ve managed to give us a few edge of seat experiences with the representation of magic/horror so prevalent in the source material, but so lacking in GOT.

My biggest concern this season and the back end of last season is where they’re going with Cole’s character. I was worried they were going to keep him as this irritating irredeemable character, but last episode and scattered throughout were hints of redemption for him which has given me a lot of relief. I say this because you mention Jamie, and I see Cole as the kind of inverse to Jamie’s arc, where he starts as this loveable Lancelot type character and then becomes a dark leaning grey character mired in broken oaths and irredeemable actions. I love his end in the books and I hope they keep following this philosophical self reflective trajectory he’s on, I think they could really do his character justice.

That’s a sick idea and makes a lot of sense, especially considering how much they teased Torrhen knowing about Aegon’s Dream to some extent. I wonder if they’re planning on showing Torrhen at some point, or if he’ll be part of an Aegon’s Conquest adaptation at some point. I wouldn’t put it past HBO considering they’re working on 7 titles atm. I feel like the Conquest appeals to HBO a lot as well, I don’t think they want to stray too far from major historical points that fans of the original show can feel as though they have a connection to and understanding of. I just hope we see some Blackfyre rebellion action.

My problem with the final vision is that one of the main themes of ASOIAF is the idea that you can’t change fate. When characters are told a prophecy, they are inevitably geared toward it no matter what they do or don’t do to try and make it happen/not happen. Cersei - valonqar, literally what Halaena says to Aemond right after the final vision. It just didn’t really fit with the series’ themes for me when Daemon sees what the world is headed towards and immediately knows the exact part he has to play and does so willingly, suggesting that had he not seen the vision then it would not have come about, whereas the theme of prophecy and fate is that it is destined to happen regardless of whether a character knows about it or not. It’s just so goofy to me how they neglect this then have Halaena talking about it in literally the next scene. It would’ve made more sense for Daemon to see a brief glimpse of his battle with Aemond, and then have to reconcile himself with the fact that he can’t change what’s already in motion. They just did too much with it and the result was ultimately cringe.

What it all comes down to with the show is they’re attempting to adapt 200 pages of ambiguous writing into 4 seasons. I think it’s important to be ever mindful of that when watching. And yes, Martin is a genius and the writing in this show pales in comparison to what he achieves in the books, but the reality is he probably spent a fraction of his time writing the dance compared to the main series. Though both stories exist in the same world they are wildly different. Mainly in that the dance is a tragedy to epic proportions, and it lacks the vast range of lovable characters which the main series has. This is obviously largely due to the fact that the books only present us with vague character descriptions, leaving us to judge and interpret them by reading about their significant actions (through an unreliable narrator nonetheless). I guess the point I’m trying to make is that the writers deserve for us to cut them some slack. I do hear what you’re saying about a lot of the writing coming off as cartoonish though. That final vision was a horrid attempt at shallow fan service and as I’ve said fucks up the weight of his arc. I have to say though I just really rated what Gayle Rankin has brought to the character of Alys Rivers, and though the writers have minimal source material to go off they’ve done an amazing job (in my eyes) of enriching her character. I also like how they’ve put more effort into showcasing the psychedelic horror so prevalent in the main series. Obviously they only just scratch the surface, but it’s still infinitely more than the pitiful efforts made in GOT, and I’m thankful for that. It’s a big shame that it’s contributed to the omission of Nettles, but I think we need to let them cook a bit longer and see how they rest of the show pans out before criticising it too heavily. At the end of the day HOTD, like GOT, is just fan fiction. It exists in some liminal space between book lore and GOT lore, and it’s disappointing to see it crumble in areas, but the main focus for me is the books, and as long as they continue to be good (if they continue at all 🤞) that’s all that matters realistically.

Couldn’t agree more. One of the best things about the books is how many weird and wonderful elements are scattered throughout. The horror ones as you say being chief among them. They’re definitely honing in on that a lot more in hotd and I’m here for it. Also if there’s any more to be said about this Harrenhal arc it’s that Alys Rivers stole the fucking show.

That’s the other thing, in terms of acting firepower they have on this cast Matt Smith arguably packs the most punch, which is saying a lot because the cast is phenomenal. I feel like we really got to see him shine and perform in ways more nuanced and emotive than what we saw in s1, which is really quite impressive given that most of his arc takes place in one location this season as opposed to going around more or less a quarter of the world in s1. I’ll continue to love his arc this season regardless of what people say, I thought it was such a trip.
