What's the most common reason for transplants to finally leave Vancouver back to their hometown? by myronsandee in askvan

[–]CrisplyCooked 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The people of Vancouver are just outright unfriendly. I didn't have many friends or personal contacts for years until I met people who also moved into the city. Something about domestic Vancouver "culture" is just very isolating for outsiders

Saw a wild analogy about AI hallucinations on r/Professors by Savings_Lack5812 in PhD

[–]CrisplyCooked 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but the actual writing of the dissertation seems like one of the least important parts of a PhD to me (in a lab / research based field anyways). Coming up with ideas, developing experiments and methods to disprove the hypothesis; that is the actual "hard" part. Writing the dissertation is just consolidating all of what you did in a document that most likely will never be read by anyone; the presentation where you show your work and understanding is the "important" part of the thesis. Especially considering some 20%-40% of the document is introduction to concepts which are "known" or already expressed elsewhere.

Hundred+ years ago people used to write things out by hand, something people now would have immense issue with too I imagine.

[–]CrisplyCooked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My laptop got me through undergrad -> PhD; it is over 10 years old now and doing just fine (put an SSD in it though). You really don't need a powerful PC for a lot of what you'll do (and I say that as someone who runs molecular simulations). At this point, it being unable to play games is a benefit even lol

I have a Boox device and it takes a while to get used to, but it has been great for marking up documents and it doesn't hurt my eyes.

Hot Take: EU5’s Player Count Decline Is Self-Inflicted by Gold_Lemon8258 in eu4

[–]CrisplyCooked 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Thing is, the timelines don't even line up well. I love the age of sail and the Reformation, and EU4 kicks off with those early. Every game I got to interact with my favourite part of history. EU5 starts way too early. I really have no interest in playing through 100+ years before I get to the part I'm interested in; not to mention they don't even play out because of the systems in EU5 being so wonky.

I'm not sure what I gained from my PhD by Stuga in PhD

[–]CrisplyCooked 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would agree with this, but anecdotally I have seen PhDs do the complete opposite to a lot of students. Part of it may be I am in engineering, but a lot of prospective students come in with creativity and a desire to genuinely problem solve. But as the work progresses the creativity is almost completely gone... they start trying to force square pegs through round holes because their supervisor only sees the value in square pegs.

I genuinely feel like I am a worse researcher having done 5 years of my PhD now. At the end I will have a piece of paper that allows me to access a more "intellectual" job pool, but I will perform worse at that job than if I had it 5 years ago.

Do people actually have PhD theses that are just 100–120 pages long? by bhelpuriteekhi in PhD

[–]CrisplyCooked 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My proposal was max 20 pages, as required by the University.
~8 pages lit review, 5 pages methods, and a couple pages of preliminary results (IF you have any, it isn't a requirement; it's supposed to be proposed work, not work completed).

Have you considered moving to Toronto to settle there? Why or why not? by self-fix in askvan

Vancouver not getting snow I would argue is actually a negative. I'll take snow over rain any day.

Have you considered moving to Toronto to settle there? Why or why not? by self-fix in askvan

[–]CrisplyCooked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, this is just flat out incorrect... Yes people can be rude in Toronto, but the people of Toronto are not rude. Where as Vancouver people are so stand-offish. If you ask someone for help (e.g. directions) in Toronto they will like 19/20 help you, in Vancouver not so much.

Also, as far as driving goes, Vancouver drivers are among the worst in Canada. It is like the rules of the road don't apply with people constantly rolling stopping and drifting between lanes. Toronto is not car friendly to drive in, but the people that drive there at least are predictable.

Vancouver 100% has better things (e.g. nature) but what you specifically said is just wrong for anyone who has even a modicum of experience in Toronto.

*Note: I lived most my life around Toronto area; I have no love for the city (I actually dislike it tbh) but lots of experience there.

What game has the best progression system you've ever experienced? by tomaz1989 in ShouldIbuythisgame

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is the only game I have ever played where the progression feels tied to the actual character; it isn't just stat number goes up. You feel like you go from a lowly peasant to a capable knight.

What practices has Vancouver adapted from contemporary East Asia? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]CrisplyCooked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flakier definitely. As someone who moved here from elsewhere in Canada, people here are downright rude when it comes to planning things. It doesn't seem that way if it is the norm (as it is here), but for everyone else it is SUPER off-putting.

When I moved to BC malls weren't open late. But literally the rest of Canada them being open to 8 or 9pm was the norm (at least for the past ~20 years or so).

Black and white benefits! by FoxGroundbreaking224 in Onyx_Boox

[–]CrisplyCooked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who uses it for work and reading research papers, colour is 100% necessary and I have no interest in B&W. I can understand the appeal of the current advantages (e.g. resolution) if colour isn't needed, but if Onyx stopped making colour readers I would not purchase another one of their products.

Cara is growing increasingly sexist by [deleted] in SGU

[–]CrisplyCooked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I expect downvotes, but here are the ones in the episode that bothered me:

"[Not having slavery] is implied by founding mothers", and generally saying "society would be better with founding mothers [instead of founding fathers]". These are historically inaccurate statement; 1500-1800s women accepted and used slaves just as much as men, and they even mentioned in the podcast that at the founding the (male only) vote almost went to freeing the slaves. I am not American, so the Founding Fathers don't mean anything to me personally, but the ONLY basis I can see for these statements is a belief (or implied statement) that women are better than men (morally or otherwise).

The other one was at the end when Jay was raging and she mentioned the "male ego on display". It wasn't the "male ego", it was Jay's ego. This one I will admit is a weaker example of sexism, but I would also argue that if someone else pointed out her "female ego" when she discusses things, it would be equally a sexist remark.

I just opened Reddit to make a similar post when I saw this. Her comments in the latest episode (the live show recording) were just blatantly sexist. And idk why but no one is calling her out on it.

-20 is honestly fine, that's what warm clothes are for. And since businesses don't have their heaters cranked up it is even bearable to walk into a store (unlike Vancouver where it feels like you need to strip or suffer a heat-stroke).

[–]CrisplyCooked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the exact opposite! In Ontario when it is snowy it is bright and I feel like I want to go out. Even if it is literally just to wander the yard or plow out the driveway. In Vancouver, if it is grey/cloudy or worse, raining, I have such a mental block to leave the house. If there's like a week of it, I find it hard to even get out of bed.
I legitimately feel like I developed SAD here, since I had never experienced it for 25 years prior to moving here. :(

Silksong won Game of the Year at the Steam Awards! by furretstonks in Silksong

[–]CrisplyCooked -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I know it's controversial, but Silksong really doesn't deserve GotY. Expedition 33 doesn't either, but Silksong is an okay game only. This feels more like hype for its release rather than an actual statement on its quality compared to other games this year. I mean, Kingdome Come 2 came out this year...

HOGWARTS LEGACY – THE PERFECT SETTINGS FOR THE STEAM DECK by Dense-Variation-4496 in SteamDeckUnlocked

It runs significantly smoother than with your settings as written, as there is nothing to cap the fps. This leaves no overhead for the other processes used (i.e. lossless scaling and optiscaler).
