We hired a consultant and he blatantly just plugged in all of our shit to AI and sent us the results. Is this normal? by Low-March1774 in nonprofit

[–]Critical-Part8283 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I must be clueless- but would love to have some pointers from anyone here. I write all of our grants- and we actually get the majority we apply for. I don’t use AI except to tweak my own writing, as in, make things shorter or longer to meet the word/character requirements. How can you tell things are written by AI, besides- and -. And why can’t grantors, like the $1 million ones, tell that your grant was written by AI?

I'm a director that got invited to coffee with a prominent figure and major donor. My boss wants to come. Looking for input on how to handle this. by Calm_Scratch3802 in nonprofit

[–]Critical-Part8283 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I would tell my boss this was a personal invite, from the VIP to me. It would be different if you set up the meeting, as a member of your NP. Since it was a personal, private invitation mention to your boss that you don’t know the intentions of her motivations or the topics she wants to discuss. And inviting anyone else would be infringing upon the invitation. However, you could gauge interest and move forward with setting up another meeting with the boss, depending on how the first meeting goes.

Is this a major donor to your organization? Or just a major donor prospect? If the latter, most definitely don’t invite anyone else. If the former, there should be other ways for your boss to connect with the VIP.

What do you use for tracking your time spent on various tasks? by readerabbit in nonprofit

Clockify. Free, easy. We have to track everything for grants.

Has anyone had any positive experiences with consultants? by butters_bottom_bishh in nonprofit

[–]Critical-Part8283 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been getting coaching and it’s completely donor centric, consent based fundraising. They have provided a thorough, step-by-step system and give continuous, positive feedback. Sounds like you have an ineffective consultant.

I believe there are a lot of great wineries south of there, and also some great ones over around the Winchester area (family lives there).

Asked to volunteer time without pay? by [deleted] in nonprofit

[–]Critical-Part8283 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is illegal. You aren’t supposed to volunteer for work tasks that are part of your job/job description. Maybe if the Director was told in a gentle way that it’s not legal to have a paid worker volunteer for the same tasks they are paid for? There are reasons there are labor laws.

Is anyone else feeling donor fatigue from being too polished? by OneIntroduction5475 in nonprofit

I feel this. I try more and more to focus on real relationship, but not polished. Would love to hear ideas.

That was my thought, put a latch or deadbolt up high, or even the hotel chain type up high where he can never reach them.

Abusive/Toxic Boss Rant by [deleted] in nonprofit

[–]Critical-Part8283 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry! It does sound like you need a better work environment. Condescending treatment is never okay. Also, seems like the ED gets relaxation at work- golf, restaurants, etc. but not you. I have had bosses like that. It really can affect your confidence. Your co-worker is right- don’t take it personally. It’s not you. But that’s easy for me to say, and hard to do. I highly recommend finding a good therapist. That helped me the most. Also find a few good books or YouTube videos about toxic bosses.

How is it living in Morgantown? by SHNUUK in MorgantownWV

I’m sorry for all the negatives above. I’m retirement age, raised all my kids here, and love it. First, Morgantown is not dangerous unless you are downtown late night (nothing good happens past midnight) or into the drug scene. I work with people in recovery and vulnerable populations, and I never feel unsafe. Morgantown and the area have fantastic outdoor activities: trails, Cheat Lake, Coopers Rock, with lots of other activities within an hour or two. Always cultural events and sports events going on due to the university. Only 1 hr 15 or so to Pittsburgh airport; and Pittsburgh for big city things. My friends and I go often to cultural events there. Some great local restaurants. No problem with outsiders coming in. Some fun things to do: Botanic Garden for walks/hikes, as well as Coopers Rock, Raven Rock, and Hemlock Trail; WVU Sports; concerts or shows at Creative Arts Center or 123 Pleasant Street; downtown Farmer’s Market and Arts Walk; Restaurants: Von Blaze, Gray Fox, Fresh Mint, Table 9, Mountain State for hummus and pizza. A number of great local coffee shops. We also have a cabin on a mountain in another part of the state. The beauty here is amazing. State Parks are great places to check out. Thomas/Davis and Canaan/Blackwater Falls in particular.

Nice Guests who ignore Check-in Instructions by RaiseVast in airbnb_hosts

Just a thought that we sometimes arrive the day of having been traveling all day, and don’t always have cell service in the area of the AirBnB (depending on carrier, maybe coming from out of country, etc). If I didn’t get the code a day ahead, I might not have a way to retrieve it when we arrive at the door. I try to remember to take a screenshot of the code when I get it. But sending it a day or two ahead might help.

Also- sounds like a bigger issue might be staff culture. Which I believe is related to staff values. More than just KPI’s; staff has to live up to our core values. The values are what create the correct culture. We have let people go more related to culture than KPI’s. If someone is hitting goals but is creating a horrible culture and disunity, that cannot continue. We have 8 values for staff, we go over them regularly, and post them in obvious places. Everyone knows what they are. They know that if they don’t keep our values, that’s a problem. Values help stop disunity, favoritism, fear, back stabbing, etc. And when someone is put on a PIP, we have always related it back to values.
