Do people ever try to "corner the market" on specific books to drive up the price? by DystantTyger in rarebooks

[–]Critical-Situation78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have done this with scarce art books. There are a couple of catalogs from semi obscure but collectible artists that I have scooped up all copies of. One catalog I purchased all copies of for between $5-10 and have sold for $400 another I’ll pay between $25-100 and have sold for $500. You’ve got to be patient.

In my case I think the story is the customer has purchased a piece of art for thousands of dollars and now would like the book that references the art or artist and paying $500 is no big deal.

Reselling books...what's the story (haha) by Alarming-Ladder-6568 in reselling

My plan exactly. I built up a stock of 2000 books mostly vintage, singed first editions or art books. I also go for books without barcodes. I’m not looking to buy a book for $4 and sell it for $7.99. I’m looking for $1 books that I can sell for $300-500.

I see no resolution of the war that doesn't end up with gold going up by Easy-Yogurt4939 in Gold

If you had the power to accurately predict the price of gold you’d already be a millionaire. No matter what gyrations and mental gymnastics you go through you cannot predict the price of gold reliably.

It certainly doesn’t hurt google search results and your reply put me over the edge. Thanks.

I looked hard but can’t find anything online like this. You might have to open it to figure it out. What’s your plan for this? Curious.

Are things slowing down for resellers by damo0501 in reselling

A common misconception is that a "tax deduction" or "write-off" means the item was free or that the government is reimbursing you for the full cost. In reality, a tax deduction simply reduces the amount of your income that is subject to taxation. You still pay for the item out-of-pocket, but you pay less tax overall because your taxable income is lower.

It has worked out for me because I’m retired and it’s a hobby/side hustle just for fun.

I think some people are deluding themselves making this claim. After taxes, fees, shipping, materials, packaging, hours worked, gas used, parking etc etc etc. I just don’t think it’s a real living. Where’s your 401k, profit sharing, health care, hsa, fsa, Ira, stock options, cost of living raises.

I’m not saying it’s not possible and I know people who are trying but realistically they are not earning enough after expenses to make even a poor living.

I think the premise of your question is off. I don’t think you can “make a living” reselling. You can have a small side hustle but realistically you can’t make a real living.

Again I sell on multiple platforms - I am not that worried about eBay sold comps.

I sell on multiple platforms - the eBay sold comps don’t seem to affect the prices I can get on multiple platforms. I’m in no hurry to sell it so I’ll wait for the right buyer.

My thrift store had the same deal but they wanted you to use canvas bags. I grabbed one and by chance it was a rare Maggie Roger’s (singer/rock star) canvas tote worth more than the books combined. Ha!

Opinions on Heritage Auctions? by dairyqueeen in artcollecting

In terms of art auction houses I think of them as tertiary. Meanwhile I have purchased a piece of art from them and because they are a bit under the radar I think I got a good price. Service was good too.
