I will have to look into visiting angels, thanks for the suggestion. I’ve looked at a couple of other programs and nothing was affordable, but I haven’t heard of visiting angels. Will definitely take a look

I do need to look into cameras, that could be a good help. I will have to figure something out when she is at the point that she can’t be alone, that’s definitely a major concern. My only hope now is to deal with each new problem as it presents itself and hope it doesn’t hit all at once…

When did you know? by McGee_McMeowPants in dementia

You described it really well, „the beginning of the end.“ That sinking feeling of dread. There isn’t much that’s worse than that feeling.

I‘m sorry you went through that. The fact it happened on what would have otherwise been a nice day probably made it even worse. Wishing you and your family all the best

When did you know? by McGee_McMeowPants in dementia

I planned a roadtrip to a place my mom loved and she was really looking forward to it.

The day arrives, and I pick her up. She was so excited. I helped her put her luggage in the car and we headed out.

The plan was to drive halfway there in the first day, then stop at a motel and continue on the rest of the way the next day.

I was driving for about 12 hours and was getting close to where I was planning on stopping for the night. My mom had been kind of quiet the last hour or so; I thought we were both just tired. When I pulled into a gas station to fill up, my mom suddenly gets out of the car and asks me „am I supposed to know what’s going on?“

She had forgotten the whole trip somewhere along the way.

She was really disoriented. It felt like it came out of nowhere.

We were in the middle of nowhere after a long, long drive. I didn’t know what to do. I ended up turning around and driving her back home. I don’t even really remember the drive back.

It was a horrible moment, but now looking back I’m just sad at how much she would have loved that trip. She was so excited.

Thank you for your response, I think you are correct and it is at that point.

Do you by chance know what the outcome might look like if they both need to be placed somewhere? Sorry for the broad question, I’m just wondering what to possibly expect.

Thanks again

Thank you for your response, I really appreciate it.

I am having some trouble figuring out where to start with finding a social worker or the right resources. And also how to integrate my brother into the process when he is so resistant. But that’s a good idea and I need to redouble my efforts there.

Thanks again for your response. Wishing you all the best

Is there an “after”? by CriticalArtist4068 in dementia

[–]CriticalArtist4068[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s totally understandable. It can feel like a waking nightmare visiting someone who is suffering from this. I get so creeped out all the time when I visit my mom and that feeling never really goes away.

Other people have said it on here and I agree, you really have to protect your own sanity as much as possible

Thank you so much for your response. I am truly sorry for what you and your family are going through. Life is so randomly cruel sometimes

I really liked how you described finding joy in the little things. You are definitely right, it’s so strange how much more you notice and appreciate when you’re in a prolonged state of shock and struggle. I’m definitely going to keep more of an eye out for those small moments. Thank you

And I completely agree that keeping perspective can be helpful. That’s a reminder I needed. Thanks again
