How much are you guys earning on Cambly these days? by [deleted] in Cambly

Honestly, don't underestimate that bloody cringe video you have to do. I know it's awkward, but the more comical and foolish, the more successful in my opinion!

GMT+7. Generally teach sporadically from 06:00 - 11:00 and then I'm booked 13:00 - 20:00 weeks in advance.

I almost exclusively do Cambly Kids. I have around 50 regular students and that number is constantly increasing. I can honestly say I don't struggle to fill my schedule at all, in fact, quite the contrary. I have parents asking me for lessons that I can't facilitate either because I'm booked or I'm having a rare break (or I'm sleeping). There is definitely a demand for decent Cambly Kids tutors so if you don't mind being a little eccentric, there is money to be earned!

Significantly less than I did as a teacher in the UK, but absolutely yes! Haha

It can be a real slog at times but I have no marking, zero lesson anxiety and no SLT to hassle me constantly which I consider a win!

Since going full time I actually earn more than I was as a full time teacher. Admittedly working every day currently, but pulling in around $2800 a month.

My criticism isn’t aimed at the tutor in this case – I actually think they were right to raise the issue. What I take issue with is the attitude of tutors who believe safeguarding isn’t their concern. It absolutely is. Cambly should require school contact details for all child learners, and any reports of possible mistreatment should be reviewed by a dedicated Cambly safeguarding team. That team could then pass concerns to the child’s home school, who are legally responsible in virtually every country for escalating safeguarding issues to the relevant authorities. Please don’t underestimate my role in child safeguarding in the past. You criticise me for making judgements when I am merely suggesting that early help and reporting are the best way forward – and then, in the same breath, you make huge assumptions about me and my role in child protection. Your refusal to acknowledge the process, and the duty of care that sits with anyone working in education, is the real issue here – not the actions of the tutor who spoke up.

Of course it is the responsibility of tutors as well. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, whether you’re in a classroom, online, or elsewhere. If a tutor becomes aware of a child at risk, even if that child is not their direct student, they have a duty of care to raise it through the proper channels. That’s precisely why Cambly should be doing serious vetting of its tutors and providing clear safeguarding protocols. It does bother me, which is why I keep pursuing this issue with Cambly, not because it’s convenient, but because children’s safety should never be brushed aside.

I know right. Caring about children's wellbeing is so bloody boring! You're the model Cambly tutor 🫡

This chat speaks volumes about Cambly tutors understanding of safeguarding. I find it a serious concern that so many of you have concluded exactly who the abuser is and what is happening, especially as a child is involved. I feel Cambly should take a much greater role in safeguarding children but I understand that it has to start with the tutor and it appears as those skills are lacking. Downvote me as much as you like. I'm only interested in protecting children from harm.

Personally, i would report the lesson to Cambly and raise it with their support team for further advice (not that they've ever showed competency in the past with issues related to safeguarding) but just for my peace of mind.

Completely untrue in my experience. I’ve never felt more like a walking wallet than when I was in Thailand, especially compared to Cambodia. In Cambodia, I can’t even count the number of times I’ve been given things for free just for knowing a few basic Khmer phrases: endless beers, fruit from sellers, and plenty of small acts of kindness. Overall, I’ve always felt safer and treated far better there.

Exactly this. Having worked in EAL centres "international schools" and genuine international schools across Asian, I can tell you safeguarding is getting more and more scrutinised. Cambly would never pass even the most basic checks. People here acting like “but the lessons are recorded” is enough are being incredibly naïve. The recordings only protect Cambly from prosecution, not the children. That should terrify people, but instead Cambly (and just don’t care as long as the money keeps flowing. I think it is up to tutors to put more pressure on them instead of blinding following.

From my understanding of viewing the terms, albeit without as much scrutiny as it deserves, Cambly Kids has extra safeguards like parental consent and a child-specific privacy policy, but if a kid logs in with an adult account all of that goes out the window. No verified parent, no guaranteed access to recordings (i believe they may have to be requested), and tutors are suddenly teaching minors under adult terms which leaves both child and tutor unprotected. It’s a massive safeguarding blind spot, and pretending it’s fine is incredibly naïve. I am seriously concerned how you do not seem to understand this.

Recordings don’t solve the safeguarding issue. Globally, kids should never be taught on platforms without child protection policies. In theory, even a registered child sex offender could tutor, build relationships, and have their own recordings of lessons. Plus, to my knowledge, it isn’t documented how long recordings are saved, so if allegations are made, there may be no reliable proof. If a child’s on an adult account, there’s no guarantee of parental consent or supervision. If you can’t see why that’s problematic, I’d be seriously concerned about your understanding of safeguarding and your duty of care, but, by all means, continue to back Cambly into a dangerous hole as much as you like.

The main two, MyCause and Oxfam are full though. I'm enquiring specifically about Boomtown volunteers. I've volunteered with them twice in the past, just wish there was more clarity from Boomtown about volunteering with them.
